«Media concentration and Pluralism: The Portuguese press in the context of the European Union», CORREA MARTINS, Luis (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

The Portuguese media sector suffered important changes in these recent decades. In fact, there are profound changes in the Media Industry, especially the concentration of markets, the anchoring in technologies and the adoption of marketing management practices. Equally important are the trends to a greater guidance for cost rationalization and demand for profitability, as well as a progressive opening to foreign investment.

In this book, one analyzes the trends mentioned above, especially the causes and effects associated with the creation of Media groups strongly integrated horizontally, vertically and diagonally. The formation of large enterprise groups in the Portuguese market is the central object of study, but the European framework (economic and political) will be a permanent reference point.

«Ciberjornalismo de proximidade», JERÓNIMO, Pedro (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

The study which we echo here, has resulted from a route which sought to answer two big questions: what kind of content does the regional press produce in the context of cyber journalism? What are the factors that determine the production routines of ciberjournalism in the regional press? Although the goal was to search the unknown, trying to answer the questions raised, there were some expectations as a result of the studies on cyberjournalism, regional press and journalism of proximity. So, it was expected that the news was the most frequent content in the cibermeans of the regional press -mainly due to transposition from the traditional means – and that the tradition of paper production, human resources and time were the factors that would most determine the cyber journalistic production routines. What is presented in this book is the result of a proposal to frame cyberjournalism while branch of journalism and to study the production routines of some of the journalists of the regional press in Portugal for the Internet. This objective was accomplished by updating, analysis and discussion of the main theoretical production on cyberjournalism, production routines, regional press and journalism of proximity. The survey on regional cibernewspapers that are published more regularly, in their paper versions, trying to understand their evolution; and the in-depth study of the ciberjournalistic production routines in the newsrooms of three of the main Portuguese regional newspapers, seeking to understand what determines them. From there we intended to try to describe the adoption process of the Internet by the Portuguese regional press and the creation of cibernewspapers; identify the ciberjournalistic production existing there; observe the journalists’ experience regarding these routines; identify the resources involved; characterize the cyberjournalists of proximity (if they existed); meet the newsrooms contexts that adopted the Internet and cyberjournalism; understand what determines the cyberjournalistic routines production in the regional press. To this end, the database of the Regulatory Authority for the Media (ERC) was used and own researches were developed, so as to be possible to identify the regional newspapers published more regularly by traditional means (daily to weekly); the study Bareme Regional Press was also applied (Bareme, 2110), from which the three districts with more audience were identified: Castelo Branco (74.7%), Santarém (73.4%) and Leiria (70.1%). For each one of these territories, it was possible to determine 1) the newspaper with more audience, 2) the newspaper that presented regular production in the respective cybermean and also 3) that the three final choices could represent different kinds of property. So, we got to the names of the newspapers Reconquista, O Mirante and Região de Leiria, respectively – all with weekly periodicity.

«The British Newspaper Industry. The Future of the Regional Press», HILL, John (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

It is never very obvious to spectators of the newspaper business just why it is that the industry has suffered so badly in recent years. Most ascribe the reasons to the arrival of the Internet in all its forms when, in truth, most of its problems were created by the newspaper managements themselves, either by weak management in the control of its environment, by a serious lack of foresight in looking to the future, or by assuming that change, if it were to come, would be at the slow pace of past change. The magisterial attitudes of most newspaper managements served to engender a growing resentment particularly among the advertisers who were forced to pay increased rates to enable the cover prices of the publications to be held down. The British Newspaper Industry sets out to distinguish the newspaper industry from the generality of single product organisations and to provide tailored solutions to its problems by drawing on a variety of techniques and practices successfully used in other industries.

«The Palgrave International Handbook of Women and Journalism», BYERLY, Carolyn M. (Ed.) (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

Now in paperback for the first time, the Handbook is an academic adaptation of information contained in the Global Report on the Status of Women in News Media, a study commissioned by the International Women's Media Foundation. The book's editor was the principal investigator of the original study. This text draws together the most robust data from that original study, presenting it in 29 chapters on individual nations and three additional theoretical chapters. The book is the most expansive effort to date to consider women's standing in the journalism profession across the world. Contents organize nations in relation to their progress within newsrooms, with those most advanced in gender equality representing diversity in terms of region and national development. Contributing authors are, in most cases, the original researchers for their respective nations in the Global Report study.

«Familiar Strangers, Juvenile Panic and the British Press. The Decline of Social Trust», MORRISON, James (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

This book argues that Britain is gripped by an endemic panic about the position of children in society – which frames them as, alternately, victims and threats. It argues that the press and primary definers, from politicians to the police, are key players in promoting this discourse.

Using a mix of intergenerational focus-groups and analysis of online newspaper discussion-threads, the book demonstrates that, far from being passive consumers of this agenda-setting 'juvenile panic' discourse, ordinary citizens (particularly parents) actively contribute to it – and, in so doing, sustain and reinforce it. A series of interviews with newspaper journalists illuminates the role news media play in fanning the flames of panic, by exposing the commercial drivers conspiring to promote dramatic narratives about children. The book concludes that today's juvenile panic – though far from the first to grip Britain – is a projection of the wide-scale breakdown of social trust between individuals in neoliberal societies.

«Sir Philip Gibbs and English Journalism in War and Peace», KERBY, Martin C. (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

Sir Philip Gibbs was one of the most widely read English journalists of the first half of the twentieth century. Prior to 1914 he reported on industrial unrest, Ireland, the suffragette movement, royal births, deaths and coronations, the sinking of the Titanic, and the Balkan War in 1912. This coverage of his writing offers a broad insight into British social and political developments, government and press relations, propaganda, and war reporting during the First World War.

As a war correspondent on the Western Front, his articles, which appeared on both sides of the Atlantic, did much to shape civilian attitudes during the First World War and its immediate aftermath. Many critics dismissed Gibbs' work as propaganda and his acceptance of a knighthood in 1921 as a reward. His writing in the post-war years covered the full range of inter-war European politics, the Second World War, and the Cold War.

«Obra periodística I (19610973): La construcción del columnista», VÁZQUEZ MONTALBÁN, Manuel (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

«Snatched. Child Abductions in U.S. News Media», DUVALL, Spring-Serenity; MOSCOWITZ, Leigh (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

Few crimes provoke the collective fear, public outrage, and media fascination that child abductions do. Stories about missing children capture national headlines and dominate public discourses about crime and deviance, child safety, parenting, the American family, and gender and sexuality.
Snatched is the first book-length study to interrogate the predominant myths centered on gender and class that shaped mainstream U.S. news coverage of kidnappings in the 2100s. Through an exploration of hundreds of reports from newspapers, news magazines, television broadcasts, and web stories, Snatched critically analyzes how news narratives construct the phenomenon of child abductions, the young girls and boys who fall victim, the male perpetrators of these horrific crimes, and the adult victims of long-term abductions who were found years later. The book’s interdisciplinary nature, methodological rigor, and thorough investigation into some of the most riveting and revolting crimes of the last decade make Snatched a worthy, important, and timely contribution to the fields of media studies and girlhood studies.
