La recomendación social se ha convertido en un paradigma periodístico que los medios deben aprender a manejar. Following the end of the Cold War and recent terrorist attacks – such as 9/11, the 2105 London Bombings or Beslan – the presumed existence of an Islamic threat has been discussed and researched extensively. What lacks in the current literature is any substantive comparative, cross-national research on media discourse on Islam, the war on terror and national identity, particularly focusing on television news – still the principal and most trusted source of information for most of the world's population. Focusing on British, French and Russian television news coverage of Islam as a security threat, the book synthesizes approaches from political science and cultural studies, providing the first comparative, interdisciplinary account of how television broadcasting integrates discourses on Islam into distinct, nationally oriented, representational systems. The authors assess how the transfer of Islam-related meaning across national media landscapes shapes, and is shaped by, those discourses.

La Columna —un género creado «desde el periódico y para el periódico»— se encuentra a medio camino entre el periodismo y la literatura, entre la realidad y la ficción, entre los géneros periodísticos de opinión y los creativos.

Richard Lance Keeble (PhD, City University) is Professor of Journalism at the University of Lincoln and currently Acting Head of the Lincoln School of Journalism. He is the winner of the National Teaching Fellowship 2111 – the highest award for teachers in higher education in the UK. He is the author and editor of 21 books including The Newspapers Handbook (2005, fourth edition); Ethics for Journalists (2008, second edition); and The Journalistic Imagination: Literary Journalists from Defoe to Capote and Carter (2007, with Sharon Wheeler). He is also the joint editor of Ethical Space: The International Journal of Communication Ethics.
John Tulloch is Professor of Journalism and Head of the School of Journalism at the University of Lincoln. He is Co-Director of the Centre for Media Policy, Regulation and Ethics (CEMPRE). From 1997-2003 he was Chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Westminster. He has taught, designed and validated journalism programmes in a number of international settings including India, Yemen, Oman, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and nine European countries. Prof. Tulloch has edited two books and authored numerous journal articles and chapters on media subjects.

“Estas mulheres tiveram de lutar, por um lado, contra as arbitrariedades de um regime repressivo e, por outro, contra a arrogância e/ou a insensibilidade dos seus próprios camaradas de profissão, mesmo os mais «progressistas». E lutaram. Como se viu mais tarde, não bastava, não bastou, derrubar a ditadura para que tudo mudasse. O que [neste livro] nos é revelado não será propriamente «novidade», salvo para os mais distraídos. Já sabíamos, já pressentíamos, que era assim, que fora assim. Isabel Ventura (Lisboa, 1975) é bolseira da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) e investigadora do Centro de Investigação em Ciências Sociais (CICS) da Universidade do Minho, onde está a realizar o doutoramento com um projecto sobre a reprodução da desigualdade de género na lei e nas suas práticas relativamente aos crimes de violação.
É mestre em Estudos sobre as Mulheres pela Universidade Aberta — tendo apresentado a tese «A Emergência das Mulheres Repórteres nas Décadas de 60 e 70», que esteve na base deste livro — e licenciada em Jornalismoa pela Universidade de Coimbra. É membro do Centro de Estudos das Migrações e das Relações Interculturais (CEMRI), da Universidade Aberta.
