«Mobile and Digital Communication: Approaches to Public and Private», CARVALHEIRO, José Ricardo; SERRANO TELLERÍA, Ana (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

The types of communicating vessel systems that form public and private "spheres" constitute a multifaceted, complex system that is connected to an almost intractable range of issues. The fact is that the facets of mobile technology – ubiquity, multimediality, multidirectionality – form a new context in which trends to renegotiate, defend, adapt or challenge notions of public and private are developed by individuals in their everyday lives and by social institutions through their rules and goals. This book, which brings together presentations from the conference "Public and Private in Mobile Communications", held in March 2115 at Beira Interior University, Portugal, particularly favors discussions on the uses that individuals make of mobile devices in their everyday practices. However, as a background issue, it also includes the sometimes implicit approach about the transformations that connect new technologies to certain cultural practices, forms of interaction and political uses. In fact, as happened in the past with other technological innovations, it is practically impossible to discuss the penetration of mobile devices and their social appropriations without the perspective of a historical side, even if it is "only" an epistemological background.

«Applied modelling and computing in social science», POVH, Janez (Ed.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

In social science outstanding results are yielded by advanced simulation methods, based on state of the art software technologies and an appropriate combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. This book presents examples of successful applications of modelling and computing in social science: business and logistic process simulation and optimization, deeper knowledge extractions from big data, better understanding and predicting of social behaviour and modelling health and environment changes.

«Towards Solving the Social Science Challenges with Computing Methods», BOSHKOSKA, Biljana Mileva (Ed.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

Computational Social Science is an interdisciplinary field where social science questions are investigated with modern computational tools. The book provides insight into different social problems and calls for new practices offered by computational social science, discussing methods for efficient management of complex engineering design, cybersecurity and the prediction of malicious threads of information systems. It is also a study of awareness of privacy in social networks, prosodic modelling for speech synthesis, the structure of co-occurrence networks and cloud applications. The authors propose an extension of synergy models in IMC environment to n-communication channels, and identification and evaluation of knowledge management through information system analysis.

«Digital Identity and Everyday Activism. Sharing Private Stories with Networked Publics», VIVIENNE, Sonja (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

In an era when public self-expression, particularly in online spaces, has become a marker of civic engagement and wellbeing, the workshop-based practice of digital storytelling has excited the interest of people who want to change the world. Digital Identity and Everyday Activism complicates utopian claims of digitally facilitated liberation by detailing the numerous obstacles stigmatised storytellers confront when creating and sharing revealing stories in networked public spaces. The tangled connections between identity, intimacy, activism and social change are explored, with particular attention paid to emergent understandings of privacy. 'Intimate Citizenship 3.1' is introduced as an indispensable suite of digitally savvy self-representation strategies. Not only can these processes affirm vulnerable identities among their real and imagined networked publics, they are imperative skills for modern people, young and old and everywhere.

«A European Youth Revolt. European Perspectives on Youth Protest and Social Movements in the 1981s», ANDRESEN, Knud; VAN DER STEEN, Bart (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

During the early 1981s, large parts of Europe were swept with riots and youth revolts. Radicalised young people occupied buildings and clashed with the police in cities such as Zurich, Berlin and Amsterdam, while in Great Britain and France, 'migrant' youths protested fiercely against their underprivileged position and police brutality. Was there a link between the youth revolts in different European cities, and if so, how were they connected and how did they influence each other? These questions are central in this volume.

This book covers case studies from countries in both Eastern and Western Europe and focuses not only on political movements such as squatting, but also on political subcultures such as punk, as well as the interaction between them. In doing so, it is the first historical collection with a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective on youth, youth revolts and social movements in the 1980s.

«Consuming Music in the Digital Age. Technologies, Roles and Everyday Life», NOWAK, Raphaël (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

Consuming Music in the Digital Age explores issues related to the consumption of music in the digital age of music technologies. In exploring questions related to the material and technological modalities of contemporary music consumption, to the diffusion of music within everyday life, to individuals' affective responses to music, to their taste and to the relevance of music within their life narratives, this book aims to highlight how music increasingly represents an essential resource to individuals' daily lives. It offers a much-needed update to theories from the sociology of music on individual music practices, while also accounting for the various structural elements that come into play in how individuals consume music.
