This book is a collection of works selected from papers presented at the ICA Maps and Internet Commission meeting held in Plzen (the Czech Republic) and other invited works for researchers working in the area of Maps and the Internet. The authors present work on a wide range of Internet-based mapping technologies.

In social sciences the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is an ever growing phenomenon. Emanating from the need of knowledge about society and economy, we are constantly striving to create ideas and methods for a better use of information. This study analyses different practices such as business process management, business process modelling or relationship marketing. It also discusses the use of ICT in a variety of examples taken from different fields such as education, web clipping, public safety, tactic knowledge, or protection of intellectual property and offers an outline of state-of-the-art applications of ICT in social sciences.

This volume explores the challenges involved in facilitating student learning of second languages at university level. Easy access to information and communication technologies inside and outside the classroom, alongside an increasing tendency for students to play an active role in shaping their own learning, are having a significant impact on second language learning and teaching in the twenty-first century. Although several recent publications have focused on technologies in education and student-centred learning, there has been very little previous research into how second languages are learnt within universities. This book aims to support teachers of second languages in higher education by setting out practical ideas that can be implemented in everyday contexts, as well as ensuring that pedagogical practice is underpinned by relevant theoretical frameworks.

Through an investigation on how Palestinian youth appropriate low-end information and communication technologies (ICTs) and digital media forms, Sanjay Asthana and Nishan Havandjian analyze how certain developments in globalization and media convergence enable young people to create new civic spaces. While the rights discourse has elaborated a set of ICT, child and youth policies anchored in three key inter-linked notions: citizenship, participation, and empowerment, marginalized Palestinian youth are reworking the meanings behind these notions in new and interesting ways.

While a decade ago much of the discussion of new media in Asia was couched in Occidental notions of Asia as a "default setting" for technology in the future, today we are seeing a much more complex picture of contesting new media practices and production. As "new media" becomes increasingly an everyday reality for young and old across Asia through smartphones and associated devices, boundaries between art, new media, and the everyday are transformed.

This handbook addresses the historical, social, cultural, political, philosophical, artistic and economic dimensions of the region’s new media. Through an interdisciplinary revision of both "new media" and "Asia" the contributors provide new insights into the complex and contesting terrains of both notions.
