«Networking the Globe. New Technologies and the Postcolonial», STADTLER, Florian; LAURSEN, Ole Birk (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Contemporary events which have catastrophic global ramifications such as the current economic crisis or on-going conflicts across the globe are not only mediated by super-fast digital communication and information networks, but also conditioned by the presence of rapidly advancing technologies. From social network sites like YouTube and Facebook to global satellite news channels like Al Jazeera or the BBC World Service, digital forms of culture have multiplied in recent years, creating global conduits and connections which shape our lives in many ways.

Bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars, this book addresses how new technologies have impacted discussions of identity, place and nation, and how they are shifting the parameters of postcolonial thought. Each chapter reflects on current research in its respective field, and presents new directions on the interconnection between new technologies and the postcolonial in a contemporary context. Offering a major intervention in debates around global networks, this thought-provoking collection highlights innovative research on new technologies, and its impact on a ‘postcolonial’ world. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Postcolonial Writing.

«Rhetorical Delivery and Digital Technologies. Networks, Affect, Electracy», MOREY, Sean (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

This book theorizes digital logics and applications for the rhetorical canon of delivery. Digital writing technologies invite a re-evaluation about what delivery can offer to rhetorical studies and writing practices. Sean Moreyargues that what delivery provides is access to the unspeakable, unconscious elements of rhetoric, not primarily through emotion or feeling as is usually offered by previous studies, but affect, a domain of sensation implicit in the (overlooked) original Greek term for delivery, hypokrisis. Moreover, the primary means for delivering affect is both the logic and technology of a network, construed as modern, digital networks, but also networks of associations between humans and nonhuman objects. Casting delivery in this light offers new rhetorical trajectories that promote its incorporation into digital networked-bodies. Given its provocative and broad reframing of delivery, this book provides original, robust ways to understand rhetorical delivery not only through a lens of digital writing technologies, but all historical means of enacting delivery, offering implications that will ultimately affect how scholars of rhetoric will come to view not only the other canons of rhetoric, but rhetoric as a whole.

«Communication, Technology, and the Development of People», WOODS, Bernard (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Originally published in 1993. This book outlines the failure of investment for Third World development to address the development of people, communities and institutions and an underlying cause of this global phenomenon. It shows how new perceptions of the communication process in development and the advent of software delivery utilities for public use introduce a basis for transforming conventional development approaches to education, health and government. This will link the private sector into the delivery of public services on a large scale. The book addresses how technology can help the poor and looks at the roles communication plays in achieving sustainability.

The author spent twelve years working in Africa in agriculture, rural development and tertiary education and then fifteen years working for the World Bank with an overview of lending for development and education before becoming the World Bank specialist in Development Communication 1987-91.

«Images, Ethics, Technology», PEARL, Sharrona (Ed.) (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Images, Ethics, Technology explores the changing ethical implications of images and the ways they are communicated and understood.

It emphasises how images change not only through their modes of representation, but through our relationship to them. In order to understand images, we must understand how they are produced, communicated, and displayed.

Each of the 14 essays chart the relationship to technology as part of a larger complex social and cultural matrix, highlighting how these relations constrain and enable notions of responsibility with respect to images and what they represent. They demonstrate that as technology develops and changes, the images themselves change, not just with respect to content, but in the very meanings and indices they produce.

This is a collection that not only asks: who speaks for the art? But also: who speaks for the witnesses, the cameras, the documented, the landscape, the institutional platforms, the taboos, those wishing to be forgotten, those being seen and the experience of viewing itself?

Images, Ethics, Technology is ideal for advanced level students and researchers in media and communications, visual culture and cultural studies.

«IT Development in Korea. A Broadband Nirvana?», LEE, Kwang-Suk (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

This book investigates the contextual factors that led to Korean society becoming ‘broadband heaven’ — the most wired nation in the world — by scrutinizing the historical contexts surrounding the Korean Information Infrastructure (KII) project (1995–2105), which aimed to establish a nationwide high-speed backbone network, as well as its later evolution, which involved redesigning the public infrastructure.

The book details the hidden mechanisms and the real elements of building the ‘broadband heaven’: the global constraints conditioning its telecom policies, the dense state–capital linkages, and the bureaucratic desire for social control. It draws on the state-in-society approach to analyze the deformations caused by the symbiosis between the state and big business in implementing the rosy vision of the broadband network. This book provides insights into how to formulate future telecom policies along much more democratically participatory lines while restraining the overwhelming power of the telecom oligopolies and conglomerates. It stands alone as a comprehensive study of the recent East Asian model of IT development, written specifically to examine Korea’s socio-historical mechanisms for promoting physical speed and broadband mobility.

This book will be important reading to anyone interested in Korean Studies, Information Technology and I.T. Development.

Alva de la Selva aborda este estudio desde tres ejes: La naturaleza de las Telecomunicaciones y las TIC en el contexto de la denominada Sociedad de la Información y el Conocimiento.
