The Middle East and North Africa region has become, over the past decades, one of the most contested and therefore strategically important regions in the world. Consequently, today there is ample interest in issues related to the MENA region and the contextual elements that shape the political and social dynamics in that part of the world. Particular interest in the region has been placed by scholars in media, communication, political science, sociology, and anthropology, who have come to develop a robust body of scholarly work exploring the media systems. However, radio and podcasting as well as oral cultures, have not received the same amount of attention. This despite the historical importance of orality in those societies.
Indeed, radio and podcast media content still exercises a powerful influence across the audiences in the Middle East and North Africa region. This is partly because the historical importance of oral cultures in that region continues to shape the political and social dynamics. This book looks at how and why radio and podcast media content still matter in a region while assessing areas such as genres, production practices, news cultures and audience reception by combining a series of works from different countries. It provides historical and political context for these aspects while offering a comprehensive understanding of radio and podcast media in that part of the world.
This is an edited volume that seeks to examine the significance and impact of radio broadcasting in the MENA region. Despite the advancements in digital media and technology, radio continues to play a vital role in connecting communities, especially in regions where access to the internet and other media platforms may be limited. This book aims to shed light on the multifaceted dimensions of radio in the MENA Region and its continued relevance in an evolving media landscape. In the MENA Region, radio has been instrumental in promoting social change and fostering community engagement.
