«Histories of Public Service Broadcasters on the Web», BURNS, Maureen; BRÜGGER, Niels (eds) (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

This edited volume details multiple and dynamic histories of relations between public service broadcasters and the World Wide Web. What does it mean to be a national broadcaster in a global communications environment? What are the commercial and public service pressures that were brought to bear when public service broadcasters implemented web services? How did «one-to-many» broadcasters adapt to the «many-to-many» medium of the internet? The thematic organisation of this collection addresses such major issues, while each chapter offers a particular historical account of relations between public service broadcasters and the World Wide Web.

«Media Regulation. Governance and the Interests of Citizens and Consumers», LUNT, Peter; LIVINGSTONE, Sonia (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

In Media Regulation, two leading scholars of the media examine the challenges of regulation in the global mediated sphere. This book explores the way that regulation affects the relations between government, the media and communications market, civil society, citizens and consumers. Drawing on theories of governance and the public sphere, the book critically analyzes issues at the heart of today's media, from the saturation of advertising to burdens on individuals to control their own media literacy.

Lunt and Livingstone incisively lay bare shifts in governance and the new role of the public sphere which implicate self-regulation, the public interest, the role of civil society and the changing risks and opportunities for citizens and consumers. It is essential reading to understand the forces that are reshaping the media landscape.

«The Creative Industries. Culture and Policy», FLEW, Terry (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

The rise of creative industries requires new thinking in communication, media and cultural studies, media and cultural policy, and the arts and information sectors. The Creative Industries sets the agenda for these debates, providing a richer understanding of the dynamics of cultural markets, creative labour, finance and risk, and how culture is distributed, marketed and creatively re-used through new media technologies. This book:

• develops a global perspective on the creative industries and creative economy

• draws insights from media and cultural studies, innovation economics, cultural policy studies, and economic and cultural geography

• explores what it means for policy-makers when culture and creativity move from the margins to the centre of economic dynamics

• makes extensive use of case studies in ways that are relevant not only to researchers and policy-makers, but also to the generation of students who will increasingly be establishing a 'portfolio career' in the creative industries.

International in coverage, The Creative Industries traces the historical and contemporary ideas that make the cultural economy more relevant that it has ever been. It is essential reading for students and academics in media, communication and cultural studies.

«Regaining the Initiative for Public Service Media. RIPE@2111», FERRELL LOWE, Gregory; STEEMERS, Jeanette (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Public service media is today challenged on every front. Publics and politicians see the commercial approach as the ‘normal’ way to organise broadcasting. There are strong pressures to downsize PSM organisations, to limit investment options, to restrict online and digital operations, to narrow remits to genres and for audiences that are not commercially attractive, and for increasingly intrusive assessment procedures. The principles no longer resonate very widely and there is growing criticism about a decline in distinctiveness. Even among traditional allies, support is flagging and skepticism is growing.

In Europe the institution has not yet presented a coherent and convincing strategy attuned for relevance in the 21st century. PSM has lost or is in danger of losing the initiative. At the same time, there are promising efforts to develop PSM in regions and countries lacking a domestic history with PSB – to gain the initiative for building PSM. This 5th RIPE Reader incorporates a wider purview as an outgrowth of proceedings from the RIPE@2110 conference that convened in London 801 September to address the theme, Public Service Media After the Recession. The book is divided into four sections, reflecting the varied and distinctive narratives of PSB around the world.

«Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World», C. HALLIN, Daniel; MANCINI, Paolo (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World offers a broad exploration of the conceptual foundations for comparative analysis of media and politics globally. It takes as its point of departure the widely used framework of Hallin and Mancini's Comparing Media Systems, exploring how the concepts and methods of their analysis do and do not prove useful when applied beyond the original focus of their 'most similar systems' design and the West European and North American cases it encompassed. It is intended both to use a wider range of cases to interrogate and clarify the conceptual framework of Comparing Media Systems and to propose new models, concepts and approaches that will be useful for dealing with non-Western media systems and with processes of political transition. Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World covers, among other cases, Brazil, China, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Thailand.

«La televisión digital terrestre. Experiencias nacionales y diversidad en Europa, América y Asia», ALBORNOZ, L.A.; GARCÍA LEIVA, M.T. (2012)

«Public Service Media in the Nordic Countries . Facts & Figures», HARRIE, Eva (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Public Service Media in the Nordic Countries offers a wealth of information on the Nordic media landscape, with special focus on public service media. The five countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – have similar media systems and a long tradition of public service broadcasting, including strong support for it and public service models that have developed characterized by the fact that the countries are small and have relatively small populations. This publication marks the start of Nordicom’s project, Nordic Public Service Media Map, which is a part of the globalisation strategy of the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the statistics presented here provide a framework for the series’ forthcoming publications, which will look more into the Nordic public service model.
The aim of this volume is to provide an objective and detailed description of the media landscape in each country as well as a coherent overview of the Nordic region. Facts and figures cover the Nordic media market, financing, television, radio and Internet, with time series.

«Corporations and Cultural Industries. Time Warner, Bertelsmann, and News Corporation», FITZGERALD, Scott W. (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Corporations and Cultural Industries: Time Warner, Bertelsmann, and News Corporation, by Scott Warren Fitzgerald, provides an introduction to the political economy of international media corporations. This text fills a fundamental gap in the critical media studies field, expanding on the relative paucity of academic studies. To ground the discussion, Fitzgerald focuses on the growth of three specific media conglomerates: Time Warner, Bertelsmann and News Corporation. Adopting an approach rooted in critical political economy, the book explains the corporations’ growth through an engagement with broader social theories: the wider conditions of capital accumulation (especially theories of corporate competition and financialization); issues of institutional logic and corporate strategies; and the role of states as regulators, mediators of opposed interests, and facilitators of corporate expansion.

The first section presents debates in social theory, addressing issues that pertain to cultural industries and dimensions in which they both challenge and extend these wider social theories. The second section presents detailed case studies of the three contemporary media ‘mega companies’ across the range of operations they coordinate, both within and outside the cultural industries. By analyzing the specifics and complexities of different media industries, Corporations and Cultural Industries examines how financialization processes re-gear the internal operations of media corporations in a manner that pits one sector against another. This book provides an in-depth study that can be used as stand-alone teaching resources or as a valuable supplement to a variety of media courses.
