Based on detailed multi-disciplinary analyses of more than 810 recorded handover interactions, audits of written handover documentation, interviews and survey responses, the contributing authors identify features of effective and ineffective clinical handovers in diverse hospital contexts. The authors then translate their descriptive findings into practical protocols, communication strategies and checklists that clinicians, managers and policy makers can apply to improve the safety and quality of clinical handovers. All the contributors are affiliated with the International Research Centre for Communication in Healthcare (IRCCH), an international multidisciplinary organisation of over 90 healthcare professionals from more than 17 countries committed to improving improving communication in healthcare systems around the world.

Esterbrook Longmaid III, MD, FACR, President of Medical Staff, Beth Israel Deaconess-Milton Hospital, Milton, MA USA

'Uncommonly valuable for the rigorous, original communication research it reports and for the careful translation of the research findings into practical strategies that actually improve clinical handovers in the real world of practice.' -Professor Suzanne Kurtz, Washington State University

'This clear, plain English book is an outstanding resource for the training of all involved in healthcare.' -Elizabeth Trickett, (Former) Director of Safety and Quality, ACT Health, Australia

«Media concentration and Pluralism: The Portuguese press in the context of the European Union», CORREA MARTINS, Luis (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

The Portuguese media sector suffered important changes in these recent decades. In fact, there are profound changes in the Media Industry, especially the concentration of markets, the anchoring in technologies and the adoption of marketing management practices. Equally important are the trends to a greater guidance for cost rationalization and demand for profitability, as well as a progressive opening to foreign investment.

In this book, one analyzes the trends mentioned above, especially the causes and effects associated with the creation of Media groups strongly integrated horizontally, vertically and diagonally. The formation of large enterprise groups in the Portuguese market is the central object of study, but the European framework (economic and political) will be a permanent reference point.

«Ciberjornalismo de proximidade», JERÓNIMO, Pedro (2016)

LibrosPeriodismo

The study which we echo here, has resulted from a route which sought to answer two big questions: what kind of content does the regional press produce in the context of cyber journalism? What are the factors that determine the production routines of ciberjournalism in the regional press? Although the goal was to search the unknown, trying to answer the questions raised, there were some expectations as a result of the studies on cyberjournalism, regional press and journalism of proximity. So, it was expected that the news was the most frequent content in the cibermeans of the regional press -mainly due to transposition from the traditional means – and that the tradition of paper production, human resources and time were the factors that would most determine the cyber journalistic production routines. What is presented in this book is the result of a proposal to frame cyberjournalism while branch of journalism and to study the production routines of some of the journalists of the regional press in Portugal for the Internet. This objective was accomplished by updating, analysis and discussion of the main theoretical production on cyberjournalism, production routines, regional press and journalism of proximity. The survey on regional cibernewspapers that are published more regularly, in their paper versions, trying to understand their evolution; and the in-depth study of the ciberjournalistic production routines in the newsrooms of three of the main Portuguese regional newspapers, seeking to understand what determines them. From there we intended to try to describe the adoption process of the Internet by the Portuguese regional press and the creation of cibernewspapers; identify the ciberjournalistic production existing there; observe the journalists’ experience regarding these routines; identify the resources involved; characterize the cyberjournalists of proximity (if they existed); meet the newsrooms contexts that adopted the Internet and cyberjournalism; understand what determines the cyberjournalistic routines production in the regional press. To this end, the database of the Regulatory Authority for the Media (ERC) was used and own researches were developed, so as to be possible to identify the regional newspapers published more regularly by traditional means (daily to weekly); the study Bareme Regional Press was also applied (Bareme, 2110), from which the three districts with more audience were identified: Castelo Branco (74.7%), Santarém (73.4%) and Leiria (70.1%). For each one of these territories, it was possible to determine 1) the newspaper with more audience, 2) the newspaper that presented regular production in the respective cybermean and also 3) that the three final choices could represent different kinds of property. So, we got to the names of the newspapers Reconquista, O Mirante and Região de Leiria, respectively – all with weekly periodicity.

«A Construção da Ciência: da Lógica da Investigação à Medição do Impacto», Ilustrada – International Meeting on Illustration (2016)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

By definition, illustration is an area that calls many others, in a more obvious or subtle way, crossing the different formation areas of the Department of Communication and Arts and reflecting itself somehow in all of them, with natural emphasis on the image areas. Every year, ilustrada will seek to bring to UBI a wide variety of national and international guests who may contribute to reflect on illustration and its relationship with areas such as design, drawing, animation, fashion and science, among others, in the perspective of the academic world of illustrators, their publics, editors and galleries that, increasingly, open their spaces exclusively to the exhibition of this kind of art work. More than anything, this meeting aims to provide a space to reflect around the topic of illustration in its different dimensions, scope and applications, underlining through it the approach and the intersection of diverse artistic subjects and the potential that comes from bridges established between them and a consequent sense of restlessness and effervescence that helps to explain the current dynamism generated around this universe and its multiple related issues. We are interested in the performative, hybrid and heterogeneous potential of these (meta)languages, their permanent regenerative capacity and constant media presence, to try to understand how they condition and/or expand our visual culture and, through it, our regard and way of seeing. We are also motivated by what in it allows us to search (or rediscover) what can remain from a certain physical sense of our relationship with image both as creators and as observers.
