«Media, Myth and Terrorism. A discourse-mythological analysis of the 'Blitz Spirit' in British Newspaper Responses to the July 7th Bombings», KELSEY, Darren (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

Media, Myth and Terrorism provides a rigorous case study of Blitz mythology in British newspaper responses to the July 7th bombings. Considering how the press, politicians and members of the public were caught up in popular accounts of Britain's past, Kelsey explores the ideological battleground that took place in the weeks following the bombings as the myth of the Blitz was invoked. By providing conceptual discussions of myth, discourse, and ideology, Kelsey proposes a discourse-mythological framework designed for analysing discursive constructions of mythology. In doing so, this research considers multiple recontextualisations of the Blitz myth when popular memories of 1941 recurred in 2005. Kelsey encourages readers to understand the politics of remembering by showing how popular yet inaccurate stories from the past have a significant impact on our perceptions of the present. Heroism, trauma, economics, royalty, rituals, human rights, foreign policy, immigration and multiculturalism are just some of the topics covered across a vast landscape of stories embracing a myth from the past in order to understand the present.

«Besides the Screen. Moving Images through Distribution, Promotion and Curation», CRISP, Virginia; MENOTTI GONRING, Gabriel (Eds.) (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Besides the Screen seeks to make an intervention into film and screen studies by examining and considering the elements of cinematic experience, production and dissemination that exist beside the screen. New media technologies impact cinema well beyond the screen; they also promote the reorganization of its logic of distribution, modes of consumption and viewing regimes. This publication speculates about the changes in modes of accessing, distributing, storing and promoting moving images and how they might affect cinematographic experience, economy and historiography. In doing so, Besides the Screen examines three key themes: distribution, promotion and curation. The volume's main argument is that we must examine those practices that exist besides the screen if we are to consider fully how filmic experience is mediated by various technological and societal changes in the early decades of the twenty-first century.

«The Formation of Gaming Culture. UK Gaming Magazines, 19811995», KIRKPATRICK, Graeme (2015)

Historia de la comunicaciónLibros

The Formation of Computer Gaming Culture in UK Gaming Magazines, 19811995 describes how games played on computers became computer games. By analysing the first gaming magazines, which were published in Britain in the 1980s, it shows how a culture of reception and appreciation was formed around games produced for home computers and circulated in the hobbyist culture of 'bedroom coding'. A new way of talking about software was developed specifically in connection with games, which assessed them according to the quality of their gameplay. Readers of the magazines, for whom this discourse made sense of their experiences with the new objects, came to recognize themselves as gamers and as a result gaming culture was born. In the years before Nintendo 'revived' gaming and began its transformation into a global entertainment industry, gaming culture was created. The book also shows how the formation of this culture was entwined with changes to the economics and technologies of games production in the 1980s.

«Robots and Communication», SANDRY, Eleanor (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Robots and Communication examines human-robot interactions as models of communication. Robots are intriguing communicators because they are created in such a variety of forms. Some are built to appear humanlike, while others are not humanlike in any way, with many different designs existing in the continuum between these extremes. In order to explore human interactions with robots from across this range—from familiar to radically other— this book employs a range of different communication theories and considers how each of them provides a different perspective on what happens when humans and robots meet and interact. The analysis of a variety of human-robot interactions also allows this book to take its findings full circle, to suggest new ways to think about what communication, and being a communicator, entails. Its argument therefore has implications not only for human-robot interaction design, but also for human communication theory and practice more generally.

In Fantastic Transmedia, writer and academic Colin B Harvey explores the manifold ways in which science fiction and fantasy franchises use transmedial techniques to create complex and involving imaginary worlds. From high profile franchises like Star Wars, Halo and the Marvel Cinematic Universe to far smaller, micro-budgeted indie projects, Harvey explores the ways in which fantastic storyworlds use novels, television shows, films, comic books, videogames, toys and user-generated content to extend and deepen audiences' experiences. Through numerous case studies Harvey identifies story, play and memory as the key mechanisms through which such creators develop, spread, and emotionally engage.

«The Psychology of Pro-Environmental Communication. Going beyond standard information strategies», KLÖCKNER, Christian A. (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

The environment is part of everyone's life, but the degree to which there is public disagreement and uncertainty about issues like climate change shows that there are difficulties in communicating these complex environmental problems to a lay audience. There are also further challenges in moving from communication to instigating actual behaviour change in this audience. In The Psychology of Pro-Environmental Communication, Christian Klöckner defines environmental communication and provides a comprehensive and up-to-date summary of the possibilities and limitations involved. This book draws on psychological theories as well as empirical findings to illustrate the links that can be made between environmental, social, cognitive, and marketing psychologies; communication theory and real life examples. Bringing together the research in environmental psychology and environmental communication, this book highlights established and innovative intervention techniques that can be used to improve and encourage pro-environmental behaviour.

«Human Rights Film Festivals. Activism in Context», TASCÓN, Sonia M. (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Human rights film festivals have been steadily growing in number in recent years. They are all bound by a common thread, human rights, and yet show distinctly different films. What leads them to be so different, and how is the universalism of human rights made sense by each? This book explores how human rights developed as a language located in history, space and time, and how the festivals continue with this tradition by adapting it for local audiences. The tensions produced by human rights' search for universality and the located-ness of the festivals are explored in detail through two case studies: one located in Buenos Aires, South America; the other in New York, North America, which was the first human rights film festival worldwide.

«Public Discourses of Contemporary China. The Narration of the Nation in Popular Literatures, Film, and Television», SHEN, Yipeng (2015)

Historia de la comunicaciónLibros

Exploring contemporary Chinese literature, film, and television, Yipeng Shen sheds light on the historical significance of nationalism for mass imagination and identification in the less-than-democratic system of China for the past three decades. Analyzing cultural products from a wide range of media, chapters move from the intellectual idealism of the 1981s, through the post-Tiananmen transition, to the national cinema of the 1990s, and finally to the Internet literature of today. Public Discourses of Contemporary China argues that Chinese subjects have, to varying degrees, transformed the state project of modernization into their own through mass aestheticization of the nation.

«Curating Africa in the Age of Film Festivals», DOVEY, Lindiwe (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Curating Africa in the Age of Film Festivals offers the first scholarly exploration of the vital yet controversial role played by film festivals in curating particular versions of Africa, African film, African filmmakers, and African audiences. Drawing on fifteen years of Dovey's work and field research, it takes us on a festive, historical tour, analyzing the curation of Africans at the world fairs, the contemporary curation of African film and African filmmakers at film festivals, and the proliferation of international film festivals across Africa today. Emphasizing the live potential of festivals, the book reveals the complex ways that festivals are co-authored by their organizers and participants, and makes a case for the subjective and contextual nature of aesthetic judgment.
