«Crossroads in New Media, Identity and Law. The Shape of Diversity to Come», DE BEEN, Wouter; ARORA, Payal; HILDEBRANDT, Mireille (Eds.) (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

This volume brings together a number of timely contributions at the nexus of new media, politics and law. The central intuition that ties these essays together is that information and communication technology, cultural identity, and legal and political institutions are spheres that co-evolve and interpenetrate in myriad ways. Discussing these shifting relationships, the contributions all probe the question of what shape diversity will take as a result of the changes in the way we communicate and spread information: that is, are we heading to the disintegration and fragmentation of national and cultural identity, or is society moving towards more consolidation, standardization and centralization at a transnational level? In an age of digitization and globalization, this book addresses the question of whether this calls for a new civility fit for the 21st century.

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

The Film Experience enables students to link their personal experiences of watching movies to a greater overall understanding and knowledge of the medium's full scope.

Timothy Corrigan and Patricia White's classroom favourite is both authoritative and joyful about watching, analysing, and understanding film. The book's features—Form in Action, Film in Focus, and Concepts at Work —combine text, stills, and links to videos online to explore specific films, scenes, and trends in depth.

With clips from classic and contemporary films (Rear Window, Life of Pi, Moonrise Kingdom, Chinatown, and many others) plus hundreds of movie images and other graphics, the thoroughly revised new edition covers everything from editing to cinematography to narrative genres, all in a cultural context that reinforces why films and film study matter.

«World Cinema and Cultural Memory», HEDGES, Inez (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Cinema has long played a crucial role in the way that societies remember and represent themselves. In the last quarter century, film has been an important medium in the public debate around the memory of the Holocaust and of Hiroshima; of the Algerian war for independence and of the Spanish Civil War; of the Allende legacy in Chile, the utopian dreams of 1968, and the aborted project of the German Democratic Republic; in identity formation in Palestine and in the African diaspora. Hedges discusses the role of cinema within a global perspective that spans five continents, and proposes an original typology of cultural memory. In the process, she re-evaluates the contributions of major directors and uncovers hitherto neglected yet important works. The author develops her arguments in an approachable style that will encourage readers to rethink their own memories of films and to reflect on the way that cinema contributes to collective and cultural memory. The book's innovative approach should transform the way that we think of film and its social effects.

«Film, History and Memory», McGARRY, Fearghal; CARLSTEN, Jennie M. (ed.) (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Film, History and Memory examines the relationship between film and history, exploring the multiplicity of ways in which films depict, contest, reinforce or subvert historical understanding. This volume broadens the focus from 'history', the study of past events, to 'memory', the processes – individual, generational, collective or state-driven – by which meanings are attached to the past. This approach acknowledges how the significance of the historical film lies less in its empirical qualities than in its powerful capacity to influence public thinking and discourses about the past, whether by shaping collective memory, popular history and social memory, or by retrieving suppressed or marginalized histories. This study aims to contribute to the growing literature on history and film through the breadth of its approach, both in disciplinary and geographical terms. Contributors are drawn not only from the discipline of history but also film studies, film practice, art history, languages and literature, and cultural studies.

«Subversion, Sexuality and the Virtual Self», ELUND, Jude (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

This book is about the construction of identity in digitised and virtual screen environments. It investigates the phenomenon of three-dimensional virtual worlds in relation to our physical selves. Using four regions of Second Life as a foundation of analysis, this book explores the issues surrounding the body, embodiment, virtual space and tourism, as well as examining notions of subversion as they relate to gender and sexuality in screen environments. The key arguments put forth in this work have their foundations in poststructuralist theories of the body and the cultural construction of identity. Most important to this analysis are the cultural and social conditions that replicate dominant tropes of power and agency as they are applied to representational practices, such as embodying oneself via an avatar through the screen. The arguments in this book are readily extendible to other on-screen environments due to the proliferation of virtual environments and other social networks which are premised on real-time engagement through digitized interaction.

«MoviWeb», OLIVARES ROJAS, Juan Carlos (2015)

«Public Policy Argumentation and Debate. A Practical Guide for Advocacy», DALTON, Philip; BUTLER, John R. (2015)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Through an exclusive focus on public policy advocacy as a practical endeavor, Philip Dalton and John R. Butler depart from approaches to debate education that focus on the rules of simulated, academic debate formats. Beginning with the assumption that readers have already developed a basic capacity to argue, they offer practical guidance for determining the fundamental issues that make up a controversy and what expectations public audiences will have for advocacy based on the issues and the burdens of advocates challenging or defending the status quo. Through examples that span a wide range of advocacy situations and subjects of contemporary importance, the authors build a framework for public policy advocacy that is organic to the communication discipline, recover and refresh foundational lessons about the uses of evidence, and provide critical questions that can be used to develop and communicate policy proposals that are sensible and appealing. Written in an accessible, respectful, and motivational style, the book is suitable for students of debate, professionals who function as advocates, and people who find themselves wishing to voice their opinion on an issue of concern.
