«A Genre Approach to Celebrity Politics. Global Patterns of Passage from Media to Politics», RIBKE, Nahuel (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

The study of celebrities has been the focus of several works from two main fields: Cultural Studies and Political Communication. But up until now, such works have produced only fragmented views of links between celebrity culture, the entertainment industries, and the political systems, which this book attempts to transcend. Analyzing the movement of celebrities to politics, this book contributes to a thorough understanding of the links between media industries and the political system, providing tools for grasping the varied ways in which media capital is converted into electoral power. To achieve this goal, Nahuel Ribke has assembled a wide range of data from the United States, Brazil and Israel, providing a complex comparative view of the migration of celebrities to politics, which incorporates a historical and cultural analysis, an examination of the respective political institutions, as well as an understanding of the impact local cultural industries had on the development of celebrity politics.

«Public Relations, Values and Cultural Identity», ORDEIX, Enric; CARAYOL, Valérie; TENCH, Ralph (eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

As organisations seek legitimacy in a fast-moving, interconnected and changing world, how do public relations help them to manage their identity, responsibilities and impact on society? In a more interactive society, organisations need to align their actions with social demands and values. If the main role of public relations is to build trust and influence opinionmakers, media, the public and the political agenda, what are the constraints and limitations at play here, and what is the impact on ethical principles?
The published research shows the profession is facing crucial changes: the existence of new organisational structures better aligned with social demands; the emergence of new techniques for interacting with organisations in a more trustworthy manner; and growing pressure by social groups acting both for and against particular social values, ideas and identities.

«Implementing and Researching Technological Innovation in Language Teaching. The Case of Interactive Whiteboards for EFL in French Schools», WHYTE, Shona (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Implementing and Researching Technological Innovation in Language Teaching takes a case study approach to investigate the integration of the interactive whiteboard (IWB) into the teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in French schools. The study highlights the advantages of collaborative action research for stimulating and supporting language teachers in innovative experimentation, and seeks to enhance our understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in this process. Utilising a framework which can inform further research into innovative practices with other interactive technologies, this book offers a research design and instruments suitable for assessing classroom adoption of the IWB. In this way, the study provides insights into general processes of technological innovation in language teaching and learning which is of relevance to further research and teacher development in today's new learning environments.

«The Palgrave Handbook of Posthumanism in Film and Television», HAUSKELLER, Michael; PHILBECK, Thomas D.; CARBONELL, Curtis D. (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

In an age characterised by an increasing integration of advanced technology into our everyday lives, posthumanism has developed into a major intellectual force. It affects research agendas, economic developments, social policies, philosophical theories, and ultimately the way we understand ourselves. This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the various aspects of posthumanism and how they are represented, discussed and exemplified in the cultural medium of film and television. Understood broadly as any critical engagement with the possibility that the human condition is no longer a given, that it is more fluid than we once thought, and that we are, or will soon be, free to remould our constitutive framework and value systems, posthumanism is the next step in critical engagement in the humanities. It reflects upon the malleability of the human condition and acknowledges the fact that we are no longer the beings we thought we were, and that perhaps we never were.

«Virtual Victorians. Networks, Connections, Technologies», ALFANO, Veronica; STAUFFER, Andrew (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Virtual Victorians seeks to re-examine the networks of remediation that allow contemporary researchers to reconstruct the distant nineteenth century, which has at this point necessarily become an artificial simulation. Our own virtual Victorians come to us out of the archives, which are increasingly available to computational analysis via digital surrogates; the first half of this volume considers the distinctive opportunities for literary scholarship that online research tools create. Contributors argue that our mediated distance from the Victorian era allows us to see that it too is immersed in virtuality – both optical and textual – as a result of its own novel technologies and networks. The second half of Virtual Victorians outlines a prehistory of digital virtuality by exploring specific Victorian cultural forms and their imaginative legacies – from the "Panorama of London" of the late 1821s to early cinema around the turn of the century. In this way, the volume addresses pivotal issues in the digital humanities from a historical perspective.

«Media Power and Plurality. From Hyperlocal to High-Level Policy», BARNETT, Steven; TOWNEND, Judith (Ed.) (2015)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Democratic governments throughout the world aspire to plurality and diversity of voice as a policy goal, which is fundamental to a healthy democracy. Over the last 21 years, however, economics, technology, political ideology and global corporate power have often conspired to frustrate those normative aims. More recently, different plurality problems have been prompted by access issues and the burgeoning reach and power of digital intermediaries such as Google, Facebook and Amazon. While some countries, such as the UK and US, have seen little creative activity from policy makers, other countries have sought to explore new approaches to funding and to exploit new technologies at both national and local level. This edited collection, featuring international scholars from a range of disciplines, examines contemporary and emerging policy issues around media plurality from grassroots local initiatives to high-level policy debates in both mature and emerging democracies, in each case drawing out generalizable initiatives and ideas for policy thinking in an increasingly complex area.

«Media Pluralism and Diversity. Concepts, Risks and Global Trends», SUKOSD, Miklos; PICARD, Robert; VALCKE, Peggy (Eds.) (2015)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

In the western world, a diverse and pluralistic media landscape is deemed essential for democracy. But how universal is media pluralism as a concept underpinning media policies? To what extent do normative approaches, regulatory dimensions and monitoring systems differ throughout the world? Being a complex and multidimensional concept, media pluralism is interpreted and labelled in varying ways in different times, geographies, contexts and policy circles. Adopting a truly global, theoretical and multidisciplinary perspective, Media Pluralism and Diversity advances our understanding of media pluralism across the globe. It compares metrics that have been developed in different parts of the world to assess levels of, or threats to, media pluralism. It identifies common challenges for media pluralism policies in the light of a fast changing and increasingly global media environment. The book is unique in that it confronts insights from all parts of the world and from a broad range of disciplines including law, economics, cultural and media studies, communication science and sociology.
