«Digital Scholarly Editing. Theories, Models and Methods», PIERAZZO, Elena (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

This book provides an up-to-date, coherent and comprehensive treatment of digital scholarly editing, organized according to the typical timeline and workflow of the preparation of an edition: from the choice of the object to edit, the editorial work, post-production and publication, the use of the published edition, to long-term issues and the ultimate significance of the published work. The author also examines from a theoretical and methodological point of view the issues and problems that emerge during these stages with the application of computational techniques and methods. Building on previous publications on the topic, the book discusses the most significant developments in digital textual scholarship, claiming that the alterations in traditional editorial practices necessitated by the use of computers impose radical changes in the way we think and manage texts, documents, editions and the public. It is of interest not only to scholarly editors, but to all involved in publishing and readership in a digital environment in the humanities.

«Cyberconnecting. The Three Lenses of Diversity», ABRAHAM, Priya E. (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

The ability of organisations to cyberconnect is becoming increasingly important for superior performance. Cyberconnecting: The Three Lenses of Diversity by Dr Priya E. Abraham explains how to establish connections across technological, cultural and social boundaries, mirrored in organisations succeeding in today’s hybrid business world.

Some companies create and innovate technology; others use and adopt it; but in the cyberage, both must closely interconnect tech with human behaviour. Face-to-face and cyber-interactions are at the heart of effective work-based relationships, which in turn increase organisational performance. To build these effective business relations, organisations must foster the discovery muscle – curiosity combined with skills – in individuals.

Priya E. Abraham shows how seemingly opposing domains (technology, business anthropology and diversity) best leverage interactions for the benefit of organisation development, using findings from practitioner-focused research conducted when leading complex cross-boundary projects in the telecommunications and mobile learning industries.

Tools from business anthropology help uncover people’s diverse needs and expectations in a cyberconnected world. Identity portfolios need reflection in development solutions of face-to-face and mobile applications. Solutions uncovered by qualitative research methods help close the gap between human behaviour and tech to engage internal and external stakeholders.

The book presents a much-needed strategic framework required for cyberconnecting: 'The Three Lenses of Diversity’, designed to organise thinking in the navigation of technological, cultural, and social boundaries.

«Photography and Cinema. 51 Years of Chris Marker’s La Jetée», MEDEIROS, Margarida; MENDES FLORES, Teresa; CUNHA LEAL, Joana (Eds.) (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Eclecticism seems to be one of the most recognized features of Chris Marker’s work.

He is often presented as a filmmaker and a photographer, a poet, a translator, a cartoonist, a visual artist, an editor, a software designer and a television and video director. Given the 51 years since the release of his most well-known film, La Jetée (1963), this volume fosters discussion of the intertwining of photography and cinema within a framework that analyses Marker’s influence in film and photography’s scholarship.

In the last ten years, many books have been published on the subjects of photography and cinema, discussing not only the history of both media, but also the transformations they have undergone through digital revolution that came to blur the frontiers between them. Furthermore, the theory of photography has been raised to a new level, presenting new and fresh thinking, raised through innovative philosophical, historical and cultural approaches, as well as through the recognition of the importance and impact that photography and cinema, as documentary media, have had in the field of modern and contemporary art.

Acknowledging this rich context, this book builds on recent research on photography and cinema, recognizing how digital technology has brought about new ways of working with images, in addition to raising new theoretical issues concerned with them. No author could be more stimulating and inspiring than Marker to start such a journey; his movies, La Jetée in particular, have consistently been a source of inspiration to future generations of directors, as well as critics and scholars.

«A New Gaze. Women Creators of Film and Television in Democratic Spain», CASCAJOSA VIRINO, Concepción (Ed.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

This book deepens the understanding of the work carried out by professional women in Spanish film and television since the arrival of democracy, a period of radical changes that saw an emergence of female talent. Although most of the literature on women and media deals with female film directors, this book also addresses television, a medium where the presence of women was significant throughout this period. This book makes an important contribution to the study of the history of women in Spanish media, focusing on the work of some well-known names, while also rescuing from oblivion others now forgotten. It brings together scholars from Spain, the United States and Ireland to analyze films and television programs written or directed by female professionals such as Pilar Miró, Josefina Molina, Cecilia Bartolomé, Rosa Montero, Carmen Martín Gaite, Cristina Andreu, Isabel Coixet and Paloma Chamorro. The book also includes four interviews with screenwriter Esmeralda Adam, television executive Carmen Caffarel, filmmaker Ana Díez and television director Matilde Fernández. Their reflections on personal and professional experiences shed light on the changes that took place in Spanish society during this period and the challenges they have faced in their careers.

«Technolife 2135. How Will Technology Change Our Future?», HILTUNEN, Elina; HILTUNEN, Kari (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Technology constantly evolves, usually slowly and insidiously – but always just as surely. Things that are currently being developed in laboratories will be in the public domain as different products and applications perhaps as soon as in a few years’ time, and as more refined versions in around ten years’ time.

This book deals with the future of technology, and explores the influence new technologies may have on life within the next twenty years. It is divided into three parts, the first of which discusses technological development and the forces and counter-forces related to it. This section also reviews how advances in technology are forecasted, and what kinds of parties make these predictions, and provides examples of forecasts for the next couple of decades.

The second part of the book investigates the various areas of technology and their related trends. This section discusses current technological studies which may have concrete impacts in everyday life in a few decades, such as those in the fields of energy, transportation, biotechnology, materials, ICT, robotics, medical technology and space technology.

The third part of the book introduces the authors’ visions of how technology may develop by 2135, and presents three different scenarios, or future worlds. These will demonstrate the possible directions in which technological development can take us. The scenarios are introduced through two main characters, Romeo and Juliet (adapted from Shakespeare’s play) in the year 2035. Even though technology is constantly changing, the writers believe that, even years into the future, the significance of human relations will remain the greatest influence on human life.

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

New Media Politics: Rethinking Activism and National Security in Cyberspace explores many of the questions surrounding the new challenges that have arisen as a result of the emergence of cyberspace, including cyber-activism, cyberterrorism, and cyber-security. The chapters in this volume provide case studies that span an array of geographies as they debate questions regarding conceptual issues in cyberspace and the relationship between politics, cyberterrorism and cyber-activism, as well as state and international regulations concerning cyberspace, resistance movements in cyberspace, and media frameworks concerning terrorism, civil liberties, and government restrictions. This collection will provide a venue for discussions on the diverse issues surrounding the theme of new media politics from international and interdisciplinary perspectives. The volume is divided into two parts, the first of which focuses on how cyberspace has been used in activism, acts of resistance and protests. The second part investigates issues related to how online media is used in terrorism and how governments have sometimes perceived cyberspace as a threat, leading at times to regulations which threaten to curtail liberties in the name of protecting the “security” of the state against enemies that may be seen as “internal” or “external.”
