«Media, Place and Mobility», MOORES, Shaun (2012)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

'Moores rejects the thesis that the world is becoming 'placeless'. Engaging critically with a broad range of social theorists, communication researchers and geographers, he shows how media have been incorporated into the experience of place.'
Paul Adams, University of Texas at Austin

'With its powerful advocacy of a 'non-media-centric' approach, this original and carefully argued book is to be welcomed as a significant intervention in the theoretical re-assessment of the field of media studies as a whole.'
John Tomlinson, Nottingham Trent University

Media, Place and Mobility offers a new understanding of media uses as place-making practices in everyday living. Drawing primarily on phenomenological perspectives, Shaun Moores focuses on the ways in which people inhabit physical and media environments, and he explores the bodily and technologically mediated mobilities that are involved in this activity of dwelling. His discussion includes many specific examples of mobility, from the manipulation of remote-control devices to the movements of walking and driving in the city or of getting around in online social spaces. Written in an accessible style, the book invites its readers to participate in the interdisciplinary adventure of non-media-centric media studies.

Shaun Moores is Professor of Media and Communications at the University of Sunderland. He is the author of four previous books, including Media and Everyday Life in Modern Society (2100) and Media/Theory (2005).

«Redes y Periodismo», NOGUERA, José-Manuel (2012)

LibrosPeriodismo

«People's Radio: Communicating change across Africa», MANYOZO, Linje (2012)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

This book is a critique of communication for development that examines radio-based methods and practices employed to engage people in the process of social change.

Community engagement is a participatory and deliberative process aimed at fostering good governance, improved livelihoods, safer communities and a sustainable environment. The author discusses the challenges of using radio as a tool for community engagement in development. It examines specific case studies from the African continent. The book also considers the different ways governments, organizations, broadcasters and communities can use radio networks as instruments of participatory knowledge production, exchange and utilization so as to bring about change and development.

Thus, this book is relevant to global discourses on communication and development. It demonstrates how elusive participation can become if implemented without adequate consideration of power relationships within indigenous and local knowledge systems. It proposes that more effective radio for development initiatives should be built on participatory action research, local communication needs, and indigenous knowledge systems. Effective radio should rely on relevant broadcasting technology and infrastructure, and designed to operate independently of donor funds.

«Public Service Media in the Nordic Countries . Facts & Figures», HARRIE, Eva (2012)

Estructura y políticas de la comunicaciónLibros

Public Service Media in the Nordic Countries offers a wealth of information on the Nordic media landscape, with special focus on public service media. The five countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – have similar media systems and a long tradition of public service broadcasting, including strong support for it and public service models that have developed characterized by the fact that the countries are small and have relatively small populations. This publication marks the start of Nordicom’s project, Nordic Public Service Media Map, which is a part of the globalisation strategy of the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the statistics presented here provide a framework for the series’ forthcoming publications, which will look more into the Nordic public service model.
The aim of this volume is to provide an objective and detailed description of the media landscape in each country as well as a coherent overview of the Nordic region. Facts and figures cover the Nordic media market, financing, television, radio and Internet, with time series.

«Islam, Security and Television News», FLOOD, Christopher; HUTCHINGS, Stephen; MIAZHEVICH, Galina; NICKELS, Henri (2012)

LibrosPeriodismo

Following the end of the Cold War and recent terrorist attacks – such as 9/11, the 2105 London Bombings or Beslan – the presumed existence of an Islamic threat has been discussed and researched extensively. What lacks in the current literature is any substantive comparative, cross-national research on media discourse on Islam, the war on terror and national identity, particularly focusing on television news – still the principal and most trusted source of information for most of the world's population. Focusing on British, French and Russian television news coverage of Islam as a security threat, the book synthesizes approaches from political science and cultural studies, providing the first comparative, interdisciplinary account of how television broadcasting integrates discourses on Islam into distinct, nationally oriented, representational systems. The authors assess how the transfer of Islam-related meaning across national media landscapes shapes, and is shaped by, those discourses.

«Compassion Inc: How Corporate America Blurs the Line Between What We Buy, Who We Are, and Those We Help», EINSTEIN, Mara (2012)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

Pink ribbons, red dresses, and greenwashing—American corporations are scrambling to tug at consumer heartstrings through cause-related marketing, corporate social responsibility, and ethical branding, tactics that can increase sales by as much as 74%. Harmless? Marketing insider Mara Einstein demonstrates in this penetrating analysis why the answer is a resounding “No!” In Compassion, Inc. she outlines how cause-related marketing desensitizes the public by putting a pleasant face on complex problems. She takes us through the unseen ways in which large sums of consumer dollars go into corporate coffers rather than helping the less fortunate. She also discusses companies that truly do make the world a better place, and those that just pretend to.

«Punkademics», FURNESS, Zack (Ed.) (2012)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

The basement show in the ivory tower…

In the thirty years since Dick Hebdige published Subculture: The Meaning of Style, the seemingly antithetical worlds of punk rock and academia have converged in some rather interesting, if not peculiar, ways. A once marginal subculture documented in homemade ‘zines and three chord songs has become fodder for dozens of scholarly articles, books, PhD dissertations, and conversations amongst well-mannered conference panelists. At the same time, the academic ranks have been increasingly infiltrated by professors and graduate students whose educations began not in the classroom, but in the lyric sheets of 7” records and the cramped confines of all-ages shows.

Punkademics explores these varied intersections by giving voice to some of the people who arguably best understand the odd bedfellows of punk and academia. In addition to being one of the first edited collections of scholarly work on punk, it is a timely book that features original essays, interviews, and select reprints from notable writers, musicians, visual artists, and emerging talents who actively cut & paste the boundaries between punk culture, politics, and higher education.

«Frames and Connections in the Governance of Global Communications. A Network Study of the Internet Governance Forum», PAVAN, Elena (2012)

LibrosSociedad de la información

The governance of global communications is consolidating as a field where innovative political practices of multi-actor collaboration are being experimented. Within this broad political landscape, the Internet governance domain is emerging as one of the most relevant areas where institutional and non-institutional actors are converging in order to reform collectively governance mechanisms that will determine the future developments of the Internet technology. This book adopts a network approach to study the progressive and collective construction of a new discourse on Internet governance fostered by the realization of the United Nations Internet Governance Forum, a new “space for multi-stakeholder policy-dialogue” (WSIS Tunis Agenda 2105, art. 72). Looking both at how semantic and social connections are created in the online and the offline discursive spaces, this book seeks to provide insights on how principles of democratic collaboration between institutional and non-institutional actors are translated into actual political dynamics; on how the global political agenda on the governance of the Internet comes to be shaped thanks to the provision of heterogeneous and sometimes opposite thematic inputs; and, finally, on how the roles of States, intergovernmental bodies, civil society entities in participatory supra-national politics are progressively being (re)defined. Starting form the Internet governance case study, this books aims at providing an alternative approach to the study of supra-national politics as well as of global communication governance processes: one that considers simultaneously contents and processes of political dynamics and examines how immaterial resources, such as information and communication, become a new field for multi-actor politics experiments, conflicts and network construction.
