«Gutenberg 2.1.

«Glamour. Women, History, Feminism», DYHOUSE, Carol (2011)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

How do we understand 'Glamour'? Has it empowered women or turned them into objects? Once associated with modernity and the cutting edge, is it entirely bound up with nostalgia and tradition?

This unique and fascinating book tells the story of glamour. It explores the changing meanings of the word, its relationship to femininity and fashion, and its place in twentieth century social history. Using a rich variety of sources – from women's magazines and film to social surveys and life histories – Carol Dyhouse examines with wit and insight the history and meaning of costume, cosmetics, perfume and fur.

Dyhouse disentangles some of the arguments surrounding femininity, appearance and power, directly addressing feminist concerns. The book explores historical contexts in which glamour served as an expression of desire in women and an assertion of entitlement to the pleasures of affluence, finally arguing that glamour can't simply be dismissed as oppressive, or as male fantasy, but can carry celebratory meanings for women.

«Discourse Theory and Critical Media Politics», DAHLBERG, Lincoln; PHELAN, Sean (2011)

LibrosTeorías de la comunicación y metodología

Discourse Theory and Critical Media Politics offers a systematic examination of the relationship between post-Marxist discourse theory and critical media politics. The volume interrogates discourse theory – as read via the work of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe – through an engagement with major approaches to critical media politics, including autonomist Marxism, Bourdieuian field theory, cultural studies, Habermasian public sphere theory, and semiotic theory. Contributors draw from a range of perspectives and disciplinary backgrounds to critically explore key theoretical issues in media politics, including the relationship between media practices and political practices, discourse and materiality, discourse and institutions, discourse and affect, the media and mediality, media and radical democracy, and the politics of new social movements. The book concludes with a chapter by leading international media studies scholar Peter Dahlgren, which in light of the book's contributions assesses the value of discourse theory to a critical media politics.

«The New York Times Magazine Photographs», RYAN, Kathy (2011)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Aperture is pleased to present The New York Times Magazine Photographs, edited by Kathy Ryan, which reflects upon and interrogates the very nature of both photography and print magazines at this pivotal moment in their history and evolution. With a preface by former editorial director Gerald Marzorati, this volume presents some of the finest commissioned photographs worldwide in various sections, including reportage, portraiture, style, and conceptual photography, and photo illustration. Diverse in content and sensibility, and consistent in virtuosity, the photographs are accompanied by reproduced tear sheets to allow for the examination of sequencing and the interplay between text and image, simultaneously presenting the work while illuminating its distillation to magazine form. This process is explored further through texts offering behind-the-scenes perspective and anecdotes by the many photographers, writers, editors, and other collaborators whose voices have been a part of the magazine over the years.

«Es mi tipo. Un libro sobre fuentes tipográficas», GARFIELD, Simon (2011)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

What have been television studies’ key works? The book answers these questions, by tracing the history of the field right up to present and emerging scholarship.

For all those wondering how to study television, or even why to study television, Television Studies will provide a clear and engaging overview of key topics. The book works as a stand-alone introduction and by placing key works in a broader context it can also provide an excellent basis for an entire course.

«Magazine Journalism», HOLMES, Tim; NICE, Liz (2011)

LibrosPeriodismo

Magazines are the most successful media format ever to have existed: so begins Magazine Journalism as it traces how magazines arose from their earliest beginnings in 1665 to become the ubiquitous format we know today. This book combats the assumptions among media academics as well as journalists that magazines somehow don't count, and presents a compelling assessment of the development and innovation at the heart of magazine publishing.

In magazines we find some of the key debates in journalism, from the genesis of 'marketing to the reader' to feminist history, subcultures and tabloidization. Embedding these questions in a thoroughly historical framework, Holmes and Nice argue for an understanding of magazine journalism as essential in the media landscape. Moving beyond the semiotic and textual analysis so favoured by critics of the past, the authors complete the story with an exploration of the production and consumption of magazines. Drawing on interviews with more than 31 magazine journalists across the industry, what emerges is a story of resilience, innovation and a unique ability to embrace new markets and readerships.

Magazine Journalism takes the reader to the heart of key questions in the past, present and future of journalism and is essential reading for students across media studies.
