«Media Ownership, Journalism and Diversity: What's Wrong with Media Monopolies?», BARNETT, Steven (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

Media companies are in the midst of fundamental transformation. For those reconfiguring their business models, consolidation into larger entities seems an obvious strategy for survival and there's growing pressure for a more relaxed approach to concentration of media ownership. Such industrial pragmatism, however, collides with the need for diversity of voice in a healthy democracy. Such tensions raise crucial questions about the nature and significance of different ownership regimes for journalism. It's important that we understand the trajectory of current policy thinking and explore alternative and more creative policy initiatives which might promote diversity without prejudicing business interests. Media Ownership, Journalism and Diversity analyses these issues within the UK using evidence gathered from personal interviews with senior policy makers and through analysis of evidence to a 2108 House of Lords select inquiry committee on news and media ownership, for which the author was specialist advisor. The material is set within a broader international context, and up through the period of the crises enveloping News Corp.

«Tales From the Great Disruption: Insights and Lessons From Journalism's Technological Transformation», SHAPIRO, Michael; HIATT, Anna; HOYT, Mike (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

So….what just happened?

The people who fuel our civic conversation—reporters, writers, storytellers—have been asking each other that question a lot lately. So have people who consume their work. Both agree: Waves of technological change have greatly altered the news. How, exactly? Hard to say.

This much is known: What adds up to what we are calling The Great Disruption upended certainties, assumptions, and behavior in media institutions, as well as the lives of the men and women who occupied those institutions. The Disruption is changing what journalists do and thus how we think as citizens. What just happened?

Media gurus often speak with the confidence of con men. We are not them. Tales From the Great Disruption has no grand theory. Instead, it presents original reporting about what did happen when the waves of change struck and what came in their wake. The first half of the book, “The Gathering Storm,” looks back for insight while its second half, “All the Space in the World,” explores the new context.

These are stories of people and, as such they are about conflict, joy, terror, disappointment, betrayal, loss, and discovery. They illuminate a complex period still in motion. Taken together, they offer lessons on how journalism can better face its Great Disruption.

«Media Convergence Handbook – Vol. 1: Journalism, Broadcasting, and Social Media Aspects of Convergence», LUGMAYR, Artur; DAL ZOTTO, Cinzia (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

The Media Convergence Handbook sheds new light on the complexity of media convergence and the related business challenges. Approaching the topic from a managerial, technological as well as end-consumer perspective, it acts as a reference book and educational resource in the field. Media convergence at business level may imply transforming business models and using multiplatform content production and distribution tools. However, it is shown that the implementation of convergence strategies can only succeed when expectations and aspirations of every actor involved are taken into account. Media consumers, content producers and managers face different challenges in the process of media convergence.

Volume I of the Media Convergence Handbook encourages an active discourse on media convergence by introducing the concept through general perspective articles and addressing the real-world challenges of conversion in the publishing, broadcasting and social media sectors.

«Migranten als Journalisten?: Eine Studie zu Berufsperspektiven in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft», PÖTTKER, Horst; KIESEWETTER, Christina; LOFINK, Juliana (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

«Complacency and Collusion: A Critical Introduction to Business and Financial Journalism», BUTTERICK, Keith J. (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

The growing passivity and changing bias of Western journalists is widely acknowledged. Journalism is increasingly hollowed out by writers who are no longer gathering news but rather churning out unsourced information, PR texts and snippets found online. Behind this dubious practice is an increasingly invested corporate sector whose stake in the mainstream media as a mouthpiece has exponentially increased in the last few decades.

In Complacency and Collusion, Keith J. Butterick focuses on the content and practice of financial and business journalism, giving compelling explanations for why big business needs the press and why the press needs big business. He cuts through the misreporting that has occurred since the financial crisis and makes clear the inadequacies of articles in prestigious papers and magazines, such as the Economist and Financial Times. In concluding his analysis he reflects on what the growth and spread of complacent, complicit corporate journalism will mean for the future of a free media.

Complacency and Collusion is one of the first critical studies of the field of business and financial journalism to be suitable for the graduate reader. It will serve as both a valuable teaching resource and a penetrating political commentary on contemporary journalism.

«Public Service Media in Europe: A Comparative Approach», ARRIAZA IBARRA, Karen; NOWAK, Eva; KUHN, Raymond (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

Public service media (PSM) have been the mainstay of Western European broadcasting for a number of decades. Yet despite a general political consensus in favour of PSM, recent technological, economic and political changes have led to a questioning of their value.

This new collection of essays explores the history of PSM in selected European countries, from their early establishment as the main media in many countries to charting their transformation and evolution in recent years. The contributions consider the political, economic and market-integration issues that impact PSM, while also highlighting the importance of the ideology that originally accompanied PSM in its initial years, to see how relevant they are in the contemporary world.

The book consists of two complementary parts:

Part I: Theoretical Aspects and Global Influences on Public Service Media in Europe

Part II: A Comparative Analysis of Public Service Media across Europe

With contributions from leading experts, the first part offers a thorough examination of the current concepts and conditions that influence PSM in Europe. The second offers a comparative study of PSM in several European countries including France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

Offering the most comprehensive study of the field to date, Public Service Media in Europe will be useful for students and researchers in public media, political communication, international and comparative media.

«Active audiences and journalism. Analysis of the quality and regulation of the user generated contents.», MESO AYERDI, Koldobika; AGIRREAZKUENAGA ONAINDIA, Irati; LARRONDO URETA, Aina (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

Even if journalism has always been in continuous transition, nowadays it seems to be going through a time of especial uncertainty and changes. Together with constant updating, abundance of information and innovation in the formats, genres and devices, nowadays participatory journalism represents one of the main challenges of journalism and the mass media. This book approaches this adaptation by analyzing different experiences and models of citizen participation and interactive journalists, besides paying special attention to the debate on the quality of user-generated content and the value of the relation between the media and audiences to strengthen the value of mediated communication.

«Mira y cuéntalo bien, eres periodista», TORRES MURILLO, José Luis (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo
