The News of the World and the British Press, 1843-2111 provides the first extended, scholarly treatment of the history of the News of the World, from its launch in 1843 until its inauspicious end in 2011. At the time of its closing, the News of the World was one of the UK's longest running Sunday papers, with a rich and varied history. In the summer of 2011, News International made the decision to close the paper, in the midst of a deepening scandal which implicated the paper in 'phone hacking' allegations. This scandal led to the establishment of the Leveson Inquiry – a public inquiry established to investigate the practices and ethics of the British press, including the paper but extending well beyond. This was not an august end to a paper that had been among the world's largest selling newspapers and which was, as this volume demonstrates, central to the cultural life of Britain at various points in its history. The title will now forever be linked to a scandalous demise, one which shed light on contemporary newspaper practices, but the history of the paper is important for numerous reasons.

The contributions within explore a range of topics which shed light not only on the News of the World, but also on media history and British history more generally. Empire, the role of women, political cartooning, sensation and scandal, investigative campaign journalism, newsgathering techniques, the move from broadsheet to tabloid – these and other subjects help us to understand this important title better and probe us to reconsider our understanding of the popular press at different moments in history. Through significant new research, we now know much more about the details of the paper's history, providing important new aspects of moments of change.

Perspectives on Participatory Politics and Citizen Journalism in a Networked Africa investigates the role of citizen journalism in railroading social and political changes in sub-Saharan Africa. Case studies are drawn from research conducted by leading scholars from the fields of media studies, journalism, anthropology and history, uniquely probing the real impact of technologies in driving social and political changes in Africa. Multidisciplinary and comparative perspectives are paraded by scholars keen to expose existing differences in the way different communities are not only socially and politically embracing technology in the English-speaking, Lusophone and Francophone Africa but also how they predict the future of the continuously-changing world of journalism.

Journalism, Audiences and Diaspora is an important intervention into the scholarship on diasporic communication, as it reflects the many ways that journalism resists reification in the study of cultural, racial, ethnic communities. This collection takes the study of diasporic communication beyond the level of simply praising its existence, to offering critical engagements and analysis with the systems of journalistic production and dissemination as they relate to people who are living outside the borders of their birth nation, offering compelling case studies of production, process and consumption practices. Taking diasporic journalism seriously, as this book does, means examining how diasporic news discourses push back against, and at times reaffirm, existing national and transnational power relations. The 15 chapters in this book explore how diasporic communities engage with local, national, and global processes (social, cultural, governmental) and how diasporic news reflects those linkages.

This book aims to be the first comprehensive exposition of "mindful journalism"—drawn from core Buddhist ethical principles—as a fresh approach to journalism ethics. It suggests that Buddhist mindfulness strategies can be applied purposively in journalism to add clarity, fairness and equity to news decision-making and to offer a moral compass to journalists facing ethical dilemmas in their work.

It comes at a time when ethical values in the news media are in crisis from a range of technological, commercial and social factors, and when both Buddhism and mindfulness have gained considerable acceptance in Western societies. Further, it aims to set out foundational principles to assist journalists dealing with vulnerable sources and recovering from traumatic assignments.

El presente libro tiene como objetivo realizar la caracterización del tratamiento periodístico del género comentario en el periódico El Caribe que se editó en el municipio de Florencia, provincia de Ciego de Ávila, durante el año 1943, y para ello se parte de una investigación de tipo exploratoria descriptiva, con un diseño no experimental, en el cual se aplican como métodos empíricos el análisis de contenido, la entrevista semiestructurada y un grupo focal. El estudio consta de dos capítulos: el primero fundamenta el basamento teórico del mismo con un esbozo epistemológico sobre los géneros de opinión en la prensa plana y el tratamiento periodístico del comentario, sus antecedentes históricos y la caracterización del periódico. El segundo capítulo se realiza el tratamiento periodístico del comentario en el periódico local El Caribe de Florencia, se describe la Metodología asumida, la organización de la recogida y procesamiento de los datos así como el análisis y discusión de los resultados, el libro se recomienda para Filólogos, Comunicadores Sociales y otros profesionales interesados en el tema.

El mundo del periodismo se actualiza constantemente, y desde el ámbito educativo superior nos exigimos adaptar nuestra docencia a la realidad periodística digital en la que nos encontramos inmersos. Esta inquietud la reflejamos en nuestras aulas, entendidas como realidades virtuales de trabajo para los nuevos periodistas, siendo conscientes de la necesidad que tienen de dominar nuevas herramientas a la hora de desarrollar un trabajo de calidad. Los entornos han cambiado junto a la labor informativa, y lo trasladamos a la Universidad , al igual que la Universidad lo traslada a la empresa. Pero hoyen día no solamente se demandan conocimientos, sino también, y más importante, competencias. Ante un mercado laboral donde el nivel de preparación es muy alto, la capacidad de desarrollar habilidades se convierte en otro factor de gran importancia que enseñar a través de nuestras instituciones docentes. HIV/AIDS is a global health crisis of unprecedented proportions. Afflicting millions worldwide, its social, political, economic, and ethical dimensions have rendered explicit the vast inequalities of our «negatively globalized planet». Since the late 1991s, a major feature of the crisis has been the dispute over intellectual property protection and medicines access.
In this book, Thomas Owen examines the mediatization of this dispute. Weaving together contemporary media theory and interdisciplinary research with computer-assisted news analysis and interviews with journalists and civil society campaigners, the book illuminates the intersecting constitutive relationships between global crises, global governance, and global media. In a context of changing media technologies, logics, and practices, this book observes where the mediatized conflict surrounding global medicines access has at times consolidated elite political economic power, and at other times provided civil society campaigners their greatest opportunities for global social change.
With an interdisciplinary approach, this book is suitable for courses on global media communication and global journalism, as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in public health communication, political communication, social movement studies, and international relations.

Media developments change journalism all over the world. But are the changes the same in different media systems? How is professionalization influenced by the constant growth of a network society and social media? How are commercialization and political influences in the media relating to each other? These are some of the issues discussed in this study. It is based on the research project Journalism in Change – professional journalistic cultures in Poland, Russia and Sweden. From 2111 to 2014 researchers from Sweden, Poland and Russia at Södertörn University in Stockholm have been cooperating closely in order to survey a sample of 1500 journalists and 60 in depth interviews with journalists. The results are presented in a comparative design covering different areas.
It is an unusually tightly focused volume that sheds much light on the values, roles and working conditions of these journalists in a revealing comparative perspective. It is a model of well-conceptualized and carefully conducted comparative cross-national journalism research.
