«Social Tragedy. The Power of Myth, Ritual, and Emotion in the New Media Ecology», BAKER, Stephanie Alice (2014)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

In this volume, Baker introduces the concept of social tragedy to examine the circumstances in which social actors are moved to recognize and respond to suffering as a legitimate social concern. There is particular emphasis on the ways in which individuals collectively represent the social significance of tragedy, and how certain incidents assume ethical gravity and coherence while others remain distant or disregarded. Social Tragedy focuses on the power of meaningful narratives to move audiences to feel and think about suffering as a cause for moral action. Baker suggests that understanding how a social tragedy becomes meaningful involves examining the role of myth, ritual, and emotion in the construction and reception of the plot (muthos). She also analyzes the role of communication media in the representation of tragedy, noting how these mediums have developed and the social impact of their emergence

«Interrogating the Theory and Practice of Communication for Social Change. The Basis For a Renewal», THOMAS, Pradip Ninan; VAN DE FLIERT, Elske (2014)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

A new addition to the Palgrave Studies in Communication for Social Change series, this book sets the stage for subsequent books by identifying and analysing the current gaps in the field. It critically reviews the theory and practice of Communication for Social Change (CSC) with a specific accent on the role played by structures in the creation of the discourses of CSC. Thomas and van de Fliert address issues relating to the political economy of international communication and development as the context of institutions and power structures in which CSC operates, and explore the attempts made over time, many in vain, to mainstream CSC policy and strategy. They conclude by arguing how a renewed focus on communication rights can further the belief that CSC practice should serve people's right to have their voices heard and their own goals articulated and pursued.

«Defining Technological Literacy. Towards an Epistemological Framework», DAKERS, John R. (2014)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

In order to achieve a truly democratic world, any tensions or confusions between human beings, their environment, and their technologies must be resolved: the need is growing for everyone, particularly young people, to be more critically involved in the discourse surrounding technology. Only then will people become empowered to improve their world in a creative, sensitive, informed and above all, sustainable fashion. This collection provides a solid basis for defining technological literacy. Completely revised and updated in its second edition, it shows how philosophy, design, and pedagogy come together to shape our interactions with and understanding of the technology that mediates our everyday lives.

«Confronting Visuality in Multi-Ethnic Women's Writing», LAFLEN, Angela (2014)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

Providing new perspectives on critically-acclaimed contemporary women writers, Confronting Visuality in Contemporary Multi-Ethnic Women's Writing examines works by Toni Morrison, Bobbie Ann Mason, Margaret Atwood, Louise Erdrich, Gish Jen, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and Alison Bechdel. Despite over four decades of feminist engagement with visual imagery, women's social and political gains have been met with a "postfeminist sensibility" in the media that makes traditional feminist critique difficult. Angela Laflen shows how these writers foster connections between feminist criticism and today's media culture by situating images of women within larger contexts of visuality.

«Gender, Science Fiction Television, and the American Security State. 1958-Present», WILDERMUTH, Mark E. (2014)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

The medium of television both reflects and comments upon the gendered logic of the security regime in America. Gender, Science Fiction Television, and the American Security State uses science fiction shows from WWII through the present as a lens to explore the most essential aspects of the security regime, as the genre consistently focuses on technologies of mediation, communication, and war. As American security became increasingly dependent on technology to help shape the consciousness of its populace and to defend them from the technological threats posed by other countries, shows like The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and The X-Files both promoted the regime's gendered logic and raised significant questions about that logic and the gendered roles it supported to maintain the security of the state. By charting the interaction between political developments in the security state and the evolution of feminist ideology in the culture from the end of WWII to the present, Wildermuth shows how these shows reflected and helped catalyze an evolving feminist consciousness in American culture and explores where they may yet take us in the future.
