«Flickers of Film: Nostalgia in the Time of Digital Cinema», SPERB, Jason (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Whether paying tribute to silent films in Hugo and The Artist or celebrating arcade games in Tron: Legacy and Wreck-It-Ralph , Hollywood suddenly seems to be experiencing a wave of intense nostalgia for outmoded technologies. To what extent is that a sincere lament for modes of artistic production that have nearly vanished in an all-digital era? And to what extent is it simply a cynical marketing ploy, built on the notion that nostalgia has always been one of Hollywood's top-selling products? In Flickers of Film , Jason Sperb offers nuanced and unexpected answers to these questions, examining the benefits of certain types of film nostalgia, while also critiquing how Hollywood's nostalgic representations of old technologies obscure important aspects of their histories. He interprets this affection for the prehistory and infancy of digital technologies in relation to an industry-wide anxiety about how the digital has grown to dominate Hollywood, pushing it into an uncertain creative and economic future. Yet he also suggests that Hollywood's nostalgia for old technologies ignores the professionals who once employed them, as well as the labor opportunities that have been lost through the computerization and outsourcing of film industry jobs. Though it deals with nostalgia, Flickers of Film is strikingly cutting-edge, one of the first studies to critically examine Pixar's role in the film industry, cinematic representations of videogames, and the economic effects of participatory culture. As he takes in everything from Terminator: Salvation to The Lego Movie , Sperb helps us see what's distinct about this recent wave of self-aware nostalgic films – how Hollywood nostalgia today isn't what it used to be.

«Changing Times and Media Transformations: The Case of Ta Kung Pao 19120966», XINCHUN, Rong (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

Ta Kung Pao is one of the most influential newspapers in modern China. The inaugural issue was published in Tianjing in 1912, and it was subsequently published in Shanghai, Hankou, Hong Kong, Guiling and Chongqing, followed by Hong Kong and Macao after 1949. The last mainland China issue of TKP was published in 1966. TKP has witnessed some of the key events in the creation of modern day China, including the Revolution of 1911 and the founding of the new republic. It was then designated by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the CPC as the government's official newspaper covering all international, political and economic news. Now available outside of China for the very first time, this insightful book is a detailed study of the evolution of the media in China, as seen through the history and the pages of TKP. It's a faithful documentation of China's political and economic modernisation. Rong Xinchun discloses for the very first time the stories behind the stories, and the paper's true status and function within China's foreign relations strategies. The coverage includes the author's dissections of the key articles, commentaries and editorials. These documents are important historical material for anybody studying the development of modern day China.

«Education, Culture and the Singapore Developmental State.», CHIA, Yeow-Tong (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

This book explores the role of education in the formation of the Singapore developmental state, through a study of education for citizenship in Singapore from 1955 to present day. The book provides a historical study of citizenship education in Singapore, whereby a comparative study of history, civics and social studies curricula, and the politics and policies that underpin them are examined. The book demonstrates how the state maintained its hegemony and legitimacy through the culture of crisis management through education. It is essentially the history of how Singapore's developmental state managed crises (imagined, real or engineered), and how changes in history, civics and social studies curricula, served to legitimize the state, through educating and moulding the desired 'good citizen' in the interest of nation building. Underpinning these changes has been the state's use of cultural constructs such as Confucianism and Asian values to shore up its legitimacy.

«Chinese Student Migration, Gender and Family», KAJANUS, Anni (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

Chinese Student Migration, Gender and Family is a study of the sons and daughters of Chinese single-child families who go abroad to study and in particular explores the increase of familial investment in daughters' education within the wider socio-moral transformation of China. The relationships of support in the family are renegotiated, and lines of generational and gendered power are changing. While this generation of young women have been raised in an environment that fosters individual achievement and competition, they must eventually find their place in the marriage and job markets that are highly gendered. Women are directed towards less demanding career paths and are wary of becoming 'too successful' to marry. Both female and male student migrants draw from their cosmopolitan experiences and resources when negotiating these tensions. Through their individual journeys of migration, they are at the forefront of the current transformation of the Chinese symbolic markets.

«Periodismo disruptivo», ROITBERG, Gastón; PICCATO, Franco (Comps.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

«Media Ownership, Journalism and Diversity: What's Wrong with Media Monopolies?», BARNETT, Steven (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

Media companies are in the midst of fundamental transformation. For those reconfiguring their business models, consolidation into larger entities seems an obvious strategy for survival and there's growing pressure for a more relaxed approach to concentration of media ownership. Such industrial pragmatism, however, collides with the need for diversity of voice in a healthy democracy. Such tensions raise crucial questions about the nature and significance of different ownership regimes for journalism. It's important that we understand the trajectory of current policy thinking and explore alternative and more creative policy initiatives which might promote diversity without prejudicing business interests. Media Ownership, Journalism and Diversity analyses these issues within the UK using evidence gathered from personal interviews with senior policy makers and through analysis of evidence to a 2108 House of Lords select inquiry committee on news and media ownership, for which the author was specialist advisor. The material is set within a broader international context, and up through the period of the crises enveloping News Corp.
