«Measuring the Impact of Social Media on Business Profit and Success. A Fortune 510 Perspective», LI, Cong; STACKS, Don (2015)

Economía de la comunicaciónLibros

An organization can have a high number of «likes» on its Facebook page and lots of «followers» on its Twitter account, but does that mean anything from a financial perspective? Is it worth the organization’s effort to maintain an active presence on social media in order to generate more revenue? Is it possible to use social media metrics such as the number of «likes» and the number of «followers» to predict an organization’s «success» even though those metrics are nonfinancial indicators? Prior research studies have looked at how organizations should utilize social media, but few studies have provided strong empirical evidence to support how the outcome of using social media should be measured and why. Focusing on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube, this book examines how Fortune 510 companies use social media. Collected over a five-year period, the authors assess the companies’ social media activities and their business performance data, such as stock return, total revenue, net income, and earnings per share. These data, both financial and nonfinancial, are matched and statistically analyzed to see whether a company’s social media activities are significantly associated with its business performance.

«Journalism in Change. Journalistic Culture in Poland, Russia and Sweden», NYGREN, Gunnar; DOBEK-OSTROWSKA, Bogusława (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

Media developments change journalism all over the world. But are the changes the same in different media systems? How is professionalization influenced by the constant growth of a network society and social media? How are commercialization and political influences in the media relating to each other? These are some of the issues discussed in this study. It is based on the research project Journalism in Change – professional journalistic cultures in Poland, Russia and Sweden. From 2111 to 2014 researchers from Sweden, Poland and Russia at Södertörn University in Stockholm have been cooperating closely in order to survey a sample of 1500 journalists and 60 in depth interviews with journalists. The results are presented in a comparative design covering different areas.
It is an unusually tightly focused volume that sheds much light on the values, roles and working conditions of these journalists in a revealing comparative perspective. It is a model of well-conceptualized and carefully conducted comparative cross-national journalism research.

«Locative Social Media. Place in the Digital Age», EVANS, Leighton (2015)

LibrosSociedad de la información

Locative Social Media offers a critical analysis of the effect of using locative social media on the perceptions and phenomenal experience of lived in spaces and places. It includes a comprehensive overview of the historical development of traditional mapping and global positioning technology to smartphone-based application services that incorporate social networking features as a series of modes of understanding place. Drawing on users accounts of the location-based social network Foursquare, a digital post-phenomenology of place is developed to explain how place is mediated in the digital age. This draws upon both the phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and post-phenomenology to encompass the materiality and computationality of the smartphone. The functioning and surfacing of place by the device and application, along with the orientation of the user, allows for a particular experiencing of place when using locative social media termed attunement, in contrast to an instrumentalist conception of place.

«Citizen Publications in China Before the Internet», JIANG, Shao (2015)

Historia de la comunicaciónLibros

This book presents the first panoramic study of minkan (citizen publications) in China before the Internet, from the 1951s to the 1980s. Drawing on theories of civil society and the public sphere, this study explores the creative practice of minkan as a revival of the concept of 'moveable words' in the Chinese print tradition. When examined against the backdrop of a much older history of Chinese print culture and its renaissance, this recent history of citizen publications also contributes to the reclamation of a lost past of resistance. It is an exercise in remembering a past that has been marginalized and excluded by official history and recovering thoughts and practices obliterated by state power. This book attempts to reconstruct the narrative of modern Chinese history by analyzing the development of a civil society that is independent of both the state elite and the new apolitical bourgeoisie in mainland China.

«Global Melodrama. Nation, Body, and History in Contemporary Film», MARCANTONIO, Carla (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Melodrama manipulates us to feel deeply about the structures that ground our experience of the world: our bodies, the family, the home, and the nation. For this reason, melodrama is a narrative and aesthetic form employed to sustain the national imagination. Globalization is a phenomenon that has profoundly changed how we live and connect to others, transforming our spatio-temporal parameters. Global Melodrama analyzes the ways in which melodrama addresses this new geopolitical reality and examines how contemporary films ask us to rethink how we organize, and tell stories about, our sense of identity and community. Through case-studies and close readings of films that emerge from different national and aesthetic traditions, Carla Marcantonio demonstrates how global melodramas, far from championing the borderless landscape that the term "global" might index, map new temporal, spatial, and embodied territories.

«The US-Mexico Border in American Cold War Film. Romance, Revolution, and Regulation», FULLER, Stephanie (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

The 1951s saw perhaps the largest number of American films set on and around the US-Mexico border of any period of the twentieth century. Many of these films engaged with Cold War politics as they explored the relationship between the US and Mexico through ideas of romance, revolution, and regulation. With an analysis of Cold War era films including Border Incident, Where Danger Lives, and Touch of Evil, Stephanie Fuller illustrates how cinema across genres developed an understanding of what the US-Mexico border meant within the American cultural imaginary and the ways in which it worked to produce the border. Fuller illustrates how a particular cinematic location provides a new way of investigating cultural politics.

«Cultural Semiotics. For a Cultural Perspective in Semiotics», LORUSSO, Anna Maria (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

In recent years, the attention of semiotics has strongly shifted from a textual focus to an interrogation of social, cultural, and ethnographic phenomena: rituals, collective behaviors, urban dynamics, politics, memory, and lifestyles. This shift has led to a rethinking of semiotic traditions and its analytic tools, with a specific design to create a strong dialogue with other social sciences: anthropology, ethnography, sociology, and visual studies. In order to clarify what characterizes this recent cultural approach in semiotics, Anna Maria Lorusso reevaluates the work of some of the most important thinkers in this field: from semioticians such as Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Yuri Lotman, to anthropologists such as Lévi-Strauss and Geertz, and historians such as Michel Foucault. Lorusso details how the social sense and social communication can function together to analyze how culture works in the contemporary era.

Media depictions of community are enormously influential on wider popular opinion about how people would like to live. In this study, Stephen Rowley examines depictions of ideal communities in Hollywood films and television and explores the implications of attempts to build real-world counterparts to such imagined places. He focuses on the ideals of small towns and suburbs featured during and shortly after World War II, tracking how these were an inspiration for post-World War II suburban development.

«Cinematic Geographies and Multicultural Spectatorship in America», CORBIN, Amy Lynn (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

Exploration, intertwined with home-seeking, has always defined America. Geographic variation and a mobile populace have meant that America is always searching for a home, yet in love with travel. Here, Corbin argues that a wide swath of films about significant cultural landscapes in America evoke a sense of travel for their viewers, just by going to the movie theatre. She considers the dialectic between the thrill of seeing an "other" place and the security of being in a "familiar" place. The sum total of these virtual travel experiences from the mid1970s through the 1990s built a societal map of "popular multiculturalism" – of various landscapes in relation to each other – through a movie going experience that combined middlebrow entertainment with moderate-to-liberal politics.
