«Tales From the Great Disruption: Insights and Lessons From Journalism's Technological Transformation», SHAPIRO, Michael; HIATT, Anna; HOYT, Mike (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

So….what just happened?

The people who fuel our civic conversation—reporters, writers, storytellers—have been asking each other that question a lot lately. So have people who consume their work. Both agree: Waves of technological change have greatly altered the news. How, exactly? Hard to say.

This much is known: What adds up to what we are calling The Great Disruption upended certainties, assumptions, and behavior in media institutions, as well as the lives of the men and women who occupied those institutions. The Disruption is changing what journalists do and thus how we think as citizens. What just happened?

Media gurus often speak with the confidence of con men. We are not them. Tales From the Great Disruption has no grand theory. Instead, it presents original reporting about what did happen when the waves of change struck and what came in their wake. The first half of the book, “The Gathering Storm,” looks back for insight while its second half, “All the Space in the World,” explores the new context.

These are stories of people and, as such they are about conflict, joy, terror, disappointment, betrayal, loss, and discovery. They illuminate a complex period still in motion. Taken together, they offer lessons on how journalism can better face its Great Disruption.

«The Routledge Companion to Labor and Media», MAXWELL, Richard (Ed.) (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

Labor resides at the center of all media and communication production, from the workers who create the information technologies that form the dynamic core of the global capitalist system and the designers who create media content to the salvage workers who dismantle the industry’s high-tech trash. The Routledge Companion to Labor and Media is the first book to bring together representative research from the diverse body of scholarly work surrounding this often fragmentary field, and seeks to provide a comprehensive resource for the study and teaching of media and labor. Essays examine work on the mostly unglamorous side of media and cultural production, technology manufacture, and every occupation in between.

«Hallyu 2.1 The Korean Wave in the Age of Social Media», LEE, Sangjoon; NORNES, Abé Mark (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosTecnologías de la comunicación

Collectively known as Hallyu, Korean music, television programs, films, online games, and comics enjoy global popularity, thanks to new communication technologies. In recent years, Korean popular culture has also become the subject of academic inquiry. Whereas the Hallyu’s impact on Korea’s national image and domestic economy, as well as on transnational cultural flows, have received much scholarly attention, there has been little discussion of the role of social media in Hallyu’s propagation.

Contributors to Hallyu 2.1: The Korean Wave in the Age of Social Media explore the ways in which Korean popular cultural products are shared by audiences around the globe; how they generate new fans, markets, and consumers through social media networks; and how scholars can analyze, interpret, and envision the future of this unprecedented cultural phenomenon.

“Hallyu 2.0’s endeavor—to ‘explore how Korean popular-cultural products have been circulated, disseminated, and consumed by audiences around the globe’—is eminently timely and worthy. The volume has an important contribution to make to scholarship on the Korean Wave. It will be of interest to scholars and students as well as an eager global base of fans keen to read more academic approaches to Korean popular music and dramas.”

«Memory on Trial. Media, Citizenship and Social Justice», HØG HANSEN, Anders; HEMER, Oscar; TUFTE, Thomas (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

This book approaches the memory sharing of groups, communities and societies as inevitable struggles over the interpretation of, and authority over, particular stories. Coming to terms with the past in memory work, alone or with others, is always unsteady ground and the activation of memory will always relay imaginations of futures we want to shape and inhabit. The contributors all explore in different ways how citizens can actualize a public and how citizens and groups struggle with their pasts and presents – and other group's understandings – in their work for futures they dream of, or envision. This implies an engagement with the notion of social justice, which in turn entails trial and revision of ideas and procedures of how to share the world. But to share also requires some kind of common ground and distributed power. The anthology thus engages with a range of cases that bring views and voices back in public, demanding justice, recognition, sometimes literally triggering new trials. Some of the memory work is done strategically, in the context of communication for development and social change interventions where NGOs, community-based organizations, governments or UN agencies pursue not just voice and views, but also very material demands for social justice and social change.

«Digital Media, Cultural Production and Speculative Capitalism», SCHIWY, Freya; FORNAZZARI, Alessandro; ANTEBI, Susan (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

This collection of essays explores the interfaces between new information technologies and their impact on contemporary culture, and recent transformations in capitalist production. From a transnational frame, the essays investigate some of the key facets of contemporary global capitalism: the ascendance of finance capital, and the increasing importance of immaterial labor (understood here as a post-Fordist notion of work that privileges the art of communication, affect, and virtuosity). The contributors address these transformation by exploring their relation to new digital media (YouTube, MySpace, digital image and video technology, information networks, etc.) and various cultural forms including the Hispanic television talk show, indigenous video production, documentary film in Southern California, the Latin American stock market, German security surveillance, transnational videoconferencing, and Japanese tourists’ use of visual images on cell phones. The authors argue that the seemingly radical newness and alleged immateriality of contemporary speculative capitalism, turns out to be less dramatically new and more grounded in colonial/racial histories of both material and immaterial exploitation than one might at first imagine. Similarly, human interaction with digital media and virtuality, ostensibly a double marker for the contemporary and economically privileged subject, in fact reveals itself in many cases as transgressive of racial, economic and historical categories.

«Digital Media Strategies of the Far Right in Europe and the United States», SIMPSON, Patricia Anne; DRUXES, Helga (Eds.) (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

With the leverage of digital reproducibility, historical messages of hate are finding new recipients with breathtaking speed and scope. The rapid growth in popularity of right-wing extremist groups in response to transnational economic crises underscores the importance of examining in detail the language and political mobilization strategies of the New Right. In Europe, for example, populist right-wing activists organized around an anti-immigration agenda are becoming more vocal, providing pushback against the increase in migration flows from North Africa and Eastern Europe and countering support for integration with a categorical rejection of multiculturalism. In the United States, anti-immigration sentiment provides a rallying point for political and personal agendas that connect the rhetoric of borders with national, racial, and security issues.

Digital Media Strategies of the Far Right in Europe and the United States is an effort to examine and understand these issues, informed by the conviction that an interdisciplinary and transnational approach can allow productive comparison of far-right propaganda strategies in Europe and the United States. With a special emphasis on performing ideology in the far-right music scene, on violent anti-immigrant stances, and on the far right’s skillful creation and manipulation of virtual communities, the contributions foreground the cultural shibboleths that are exchanged among far-right supporters on the Internet, which serve to generate a sense of group belonging and the illusion of power far greater that the known numbers of neo-Nazis in any one country might suggest. Moreover, with attention to transatlantic right-wing movements and their use of particularly digital media, the essays in this volume put pressure on the similarities among the various national agents, while accommodating differences in the virtual and sometimes violent identities created and nurtured online.
