«The Communication Panacea: Pediatrics and General Semantics», BERGER, Eva; BERGER, Isaac (2015)

Comunicación y culturaLibros

The Communication Panacea: Pediatrics and General Semantics fills a major gap in the study of the modern doctor-patient relationship, applying the principles of General Semantics to the uncanny communicative processes affecting the way patients perceive their illness, as well as their response to it.

Writing in the tradition of Neil Postman, Ivan Illich, and Susan Sontag, this collaboration between a doctor of philosophy and a doctor of medicine combines an innovative theoretical approach with the stories of eight patients shared not as ‘case-studies,’ but as key-moments to show how vital it is to change our mentality and our language when addressing the idea of illness itself.

The authors coin the term “personalized semantic medicine” and suggest it as a strategy to regain focus on the patient within the increasingly complex, corporate-like and technological medical environment. They challenge us to make a linguistic and conceptual shift to think of medicine as art and not as war, and provide an accessible and valuable contribution to the study of language and social interaction, strategic communication, general semantics, media ecology, cultural studies, social theory, and the practice of medicine, making the book relevant for doctors, patients, and policy makers, as well as media and health communication scholars.

«Consumo, Conunicaçao e Arte», ROMAO FERREIRA, Francisco; DA VEIGA SOARES CARVALHO, Maria Claudia; FERREIRA FREITAS, Ricardo; DONIZETE PRADO, Shirley (Orgs.) (2015)

«Digitizing Identities: Doing Identity in a Networked World», VAN DER PLOEG, Irma; PRIDMORE, Jason (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosSociología de la comunicación

This book explores contemporary transformations of identities in a digitizing society across a range of domains of modern life. As digital technology and ICTs have come to pervade virtually all aspects of modern societies, the routine registration of personal data has increased exponentially, thus allowing a proliferation of new ways of establishing who we are. Rather than representing straightforward progress, however, these new practices generate important moral and socio-political concerns. While access to and control over personal data is at the heart of many contemporary strategic innovations domains as diverse as migration management, law enforcement, crime and health prevention, "e-governance," internal and external security, to new business models and marketing tools, we also see new forms of exclusion, exploitation, and disadvantage emerging.

«Media Convergence Handbook – Vol. 1: Journalism, Broadcasting, and Social Media Aspects of Convergence», LUGMAYR, Artur; DAL ZOTTO, Cinzia (Eds.) (2015)

LibrosPeriodismo

The Media Convergence Handbook sheds new light on the complexity of media convergence and the related business challenges. Approaching the topic from a managerial, technological as well as end-consumer perspective, it acts as a reference book and educational resource in the field. Media convergence at business level may imply transforming business models and using multiplatform content production and distribution tools. However, it is shown that the implementation of convergence strategies can only succeed when expectations and aspirations of every actor involved are taken into account. Media consumers, content producers and managers face different challenges in the process of media convergence.

Volume I of the Media Convergence Handbook encourages an active discourse on media convergence by introducing the concept through general perspective articles and addressing the real-world challenges of conversion in the publishing, broadcasting and social media sectors.

«Biopolitical Media: Catastrophe, Immunity and Bare Life», MEEK, Allen (2015)

Historia de la comunicaciónLibros

This book presents an historical account of media and catastrophe that engages with theories of biopolitics in the work of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Michael Hardt, Antonio Negri and others. It explains how responses to catastrophe in media and cultural criticism over the past 151 years are embedded in biological conceptions of life and death, contamination and immunity, race and species. Mediated catastrophe is often understood today in terms of collective memory and according to therapeutic or redemptive accounts of trauma. In contrast to these approaches this book emphasizes the use of media to record, archive and analyze physical appearance and movement; to capture viewer attention through shock; to monitor and control bodies in economies of production and consumption; to enmesh social relations in information networks; and situate subjects in discourses of victimhood, immunity, survival and resilience. Chapters are focused on historical case studies of early photography, Nazi propaganda, colonial stereotypes, Hiroshima, the Holocaust, the Cold War and the war on terror.

«Photography and Place: Seeing and Not Seeing Germany After 1945», WEST BRETT, Donna (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

As a recording device, photography plays a unique role in how we remember places and events that happened there. This includes recording events as they happen, or recording places where something occurred before the photograph was taken, commonly referred to as aftermath photography. This book presents a theoretical and historical analysis of German photography of place after 1945. It analyses how major historical ruptures in twentieth-century Germany and associated places of trauma, memory and history affected the visual field and the circumstances of looking. These ruptures are used to generate a new reading of postwar German photography of place. The analysis includes original research on world-renowned German photographers such as Thomas Struth, Thomas Demand, Michael Schmidt, Boris Becker and Thomas Ruff as well as photographers largely unknown in the Anglophone world.

«Mobility and Migration in Film and Moving Image Art: Cinema Beyond Europe», BAYRAKTAR, Nilgün (2015)

Expresiones audiovisualesLibros

This book examines the historical and contemporary tensions around mobility and identity in Europe in relation to experimental moving image practices in contemporary art and cinema. Drawing on theories of migrant and diasporic cinema, projected image art, and mobility studies, Bayraktar provides historically situated close-readings of films, videos, and cinematic installations that concern diverse mobilities across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The geopolitical focus of the book, Europe, is at the same time understood as a site of contention: the works analyzed challenge territorially bounded conceptions of identity and culture; they establish a non-Western counter-geography of Europe, which has produced multiple "others" in its constant efforts to recompose its identity and borders. This interdisciplinary study underscores the ways European ideals of mobility and fluidity are deeply enmeshed with immobility, forced migration, illegalization, inequality, racism, and xenophobia. Ultimately, Bayraktar asserts that recent transformations in the cinematic form parallel Europe’s concurrent geopolitical transformations: As European borders have multiplied and become highly flexible, expanding to non-European territories and manifesting themselves in European metropolitan centers, airports, ports, and detention centers, the aesthetic borders between cinema and art have also become blurred, producing a new form of moving image art that defies easy categorization. This shift is contextualized in relation to the broader 'cinematic turn' in contemporary art seen in the growing prominence of screen-based works and cinematic installations in galleries, international art exhibitions, and biennials worldwide.
