Queer people in Japan

Japan’s queer community has been strengthening its presence in recent decades, with many individuals increasingly taking on roles as LGBTQ activists or carving out safe spaces from HIV/AIDS awareness centers to cabaret bars.

In Edges of the Rainbow, published by The New Press, we receive intimate portraits of this community that center and celebrate those typically seen as on the fringes of Japanese society. The book focuses on the everyday lives of about a dozen individuals and couples, with over 150, snapshot-like photographs by Michel Delsol accompanied by short interviews by journalist Haruku Shinozaki that amplify each story.

Far from romanticizing this community, his photographs simply offer insight into the lives of LGBTQ individuals, allowing them to present their stories on their own terms to an international audience.

Sayak Valencia: Videoperformances, cuentos peludos e Interpelación de cuero

Interpelación de cuero de Sayak Valencia: una performance transfeminista (México, Madrid), de Marie-Agnes Palaisi

La propuesta artística de Sayak Valencia en Interpelación enfrenta el mundo heteronormativo hegemónico con el mundo de la disidencia sexual perturbando los géneros para revelar la esencialización de las relaciones de dominación que conducen a la banalización de la violencia de género. Su planteamiento es pedagógico:  la videoperfomance se realizó a partir de una performance realizada en Madrid en 2007 y se sumó a la irrupción y al paseo por el espacio público un texto que pretende ser un manifiesto (Bienvenidos a cuentos peludos) que manipulaba con mucho humor diversos conceptos filosóficos relacionados con la comprensión del sistema sexo-género-sexualidad. Analizaremos esa performance en torno al concepto clave butleriano de la “interpelación”, y aquellos de “gueto gay” según las propuestas de Sam Bourcier, sin olvidar de situarla en el contexto mexicano que, desde hace dos décadas, ve una explosión de violencia machista .

Gertrude and Alice

Alice Austen (March 17, 1866–June 9, 1952): She became the first American woman known to work outside the studio, creating what we now know as street photography.
